IH toolbar planter Chain comes off..help?

I have an older 4 row IH toolbar planter. One of the chains that operates one of the planter cans keeps coming off. Chain looks ok, tentioner and spring seems alittle stiff but I wired that to tighten the chain and the chain still comes off. Could there be something to do with the seed hopper/can? Can't figure this one out...any ideas?

I have an old two row Covington I use occasionally but the principal is the same. I have discovered that the bushings are worn in the shaft that the sprocket is mounted to that allows it to wobble a lot. Still haven't replaced the bushings yet but convinced that is causing the problem. Never have the problem on the other side and bushings are tight there. That is the only thing I can find different about the two sides. Under pressure of the chain running tight, it must be affecting the alignment since it is so badly worn.

Hey Ron,

One of your sprockets and/or axles is walking sideways on you.

Been a lot of years ago, but seems to me that there are roll pins or bolts that hold those shafts lined up? Something is letting 'er go lateral on ya.

Like Allan says,it is an alignment problem. How fast are you going. It seems some of those older planters were only good for 4-4.5 mph.

I'm pretty sure I'm not going over 5 mph, maybe less. Hey, next to posting a picture how do I determine what model this planter is? There are numbers on the main gear box. The planter has four round seed cans, 4 different drive sprockets something like 8, 12, 18, 24 (but I'm not real sure about the number of teeth), plus it has a small lever with 2,3,and4 adjustments. This one has road tires and hyraulics. It looks like it came from the factory with fertilizer bins but they've been gone long ago.

Just re-read your post.

The chain has to be able to "flex", so if it is so tight that it won't follow the sprocket around, it will jump.

Also, make sure the tensioner is on the "slack" side of the chain.
