My dad and I looked at it together (Hesston 1014+2) he seems to approve and we're getting it for $600. Needs proper size tires as it has car tires on it, but we already have one tire and the guy threw in a rim that just needs a tire with the deal. We're gonna try it on a tractor, and as long as it runs ok I'm pulling it home.

Still haven't heard from anyone who knows how they work in swamp/marsh hay. I'm thinking that 14' may be just too big of a swath for our little Massey 12 baler and our Fox 3000 chopper. It's a hell of a load chopping it as it is behind our 9 ft machine....

Don

I bought one from the neighbor last year. It had old car tires on it. The parts book, which I have, calls for 9.50L X 14 tires, but I put a set of 11L 15's and they look OK to me. I used it a little bit and it worked well after a fashion. It needed and still needs some work. It will get new sections this spring along with a new seal in the pump. I had problems with plugging the right side of the cutterbar, but all the tines on the right side of the reel were broken off. After new tines and sections, hopefully she will work good this summer. By the way what is the "+2"? mine is just a 1014. E-mail is open if you want to drop me a line.

I guess that means it's a 2 peice sickle bar, so it'll have (2) 7' bars in it and it's driven on both ends. This one seems to be in really good shape overall, but I did notice one crack on the crimper frame that doesn't look too bad. It also appears to be missing 2 sheilds, one that goes form the crimper to the back, and one that covers the rest of the drive belt that goes up and drives the sickle. Guess I'll have to see how it works without until I can track down some sheilds for it if we get it.

Once I hook it onto a tractor I'll have to try it out in the yard before we take it, but if it seems to work it's coming home.

Hi Don , I'm a newbie sort of but I read and listen and make dumb comments occassionally so here goes . If you are making hay ( as refered to by the baler statement ) I've heard that the wider the cutter the worse ( slower ) the hay cures here in the humid midwest because the windrow is just to thick unless you use a inverter or tedder to turn it . If you're swathing I guess that's different but with the price of fuel would that extra pass make much sense ? Cutting almost twice as much on the first go round is nullified if you have to make an extra pass later . So the cost is the same for time and money . Just curious . ...Randy

PS : The cost of fuel doesn't bother me so much with only 6 acres of hay to do but if the object is to make money ( or save money as the case may be ) that's a consideration right ?

My Dad and I are weekend farmers of sorts so the curing time doesn't affect us as much. We're still hanging onto our 9 ft machine for swamps and back up. We normally pull 3 windrows together for 2nd and 3rd crop, and in the past we have done it with the 1st crop. With a 14' machine, we will be pulling 2 windrows together and there won't be a 3rd in the middle on the bottom (unturned) so it will probably actually speed up the drying time for us. We've used a 14' machine before and it worked pretty good for us.
