Yeah the Amish probably use small planters but just think of their fuel savings with the horses.

I really like to see pictures of farming going on. I have a digital camera and have some pictures but I have tried and tried to post pictures and cannot figure out how to do it?

I think the turning without lifting issue is in reference to the strain on an implement (especially if a planter had double disc openers) when making a 90 degree turn while in the ground as opposed to why hesdlands are planted first. If the soil is loose enough it may not do any harm but if the soil is firm you can mess up a planter doing that (don't ask how I know).

Either way, the pictures are great. Reminds me of days on our Oliver 1650 with a 3-pt mount 6-row JD 7100. If that baby was loaded with corn and insecticide the only way you could turn on the end of a round was to plant one brake and hope the front end of the tractor was touching the ground enough to help turn when the 3 point lifted the planter up.

Yeah, I"m doing the headlands in the pictures. 4 rounds so I have 16 rows around the feild, then do the middle back & forth.

We start at the outside of the field, keep going around without picking it up until there is enough room to turn a combine, and then start going back and forth and picking up the planter on the headlands.

can't beleive you guys plant around curves like that.you can't cultivate them or combine them without knocking down, Really odd to see the old deere unit like that still beng used let alone drug around corners.

We've done it that way long as I can remember. I went back and looked at your pictures several times today. I kept visualizing myself on the tractor seat. I just hope this neck tie doesn't get cought in the steering wheel! Glenn F.

hey thats fine what you guys do if it works for ya no problem,all I know is if we got caught planting like that in are area you would be really the talk of the community. I deal with the public and farmers every day so if you think that was being critical sorry. thats just the way it is in my area. You don't run at least 16row equipment you better not be planting in my area. Not saying its right just the way things are in this area. How they make it pencil out I don't know.

I was gonna stay out of this but now I have to enter.

Rick with a 16 row you cannot corner like that be cause the inside end would be going backwards and draging sideways with a four row you can do it and get tighter into the corners to plant all your tillable acres.

Every operation and area is a little different.

What works in one area may not work in another.

Reading on here I've learned just because its not the way I do it dosen't make it wrong.

I agree. I guess I took your other posts the wrong way-where you said something about "if don't run at least 16row equipment you better not be planting"-not sure what that meant. What would happen if you pulled out the 4 row?

I guess in your area when those guys get done planting in 3 days they have a lot of time to do nothing more than talk about their neighbors percieved shortcomings.

Around us we have our share of BTO's and 24row planters. But there are still a lot of people running around with 6 and 8 row stuff trying to scratch out a living on 800 acres and don't have money to waste on excess capacity. I have one neighbor who farms over 1000 with 1 JD 7200 8-row planter. He puts in some long hours but I as I recall the last couple years he has usually been done about the same time as everyone else.

I just started a three years ago and have pretty much old 6-row stuff. But all of my neighbors-large and small-have been incredibly helpful and gracious. I had a couple jump do some custom work for me while I was building a reliable line of equipment, worked out good for all involved.

The 1st year I started I had a guy spend 2 hours one afternoon helping my change a bearing on my old combine-and right in the middle of harvest time when he needed to be in the field. I haven't forgot that and if he is ever in a pinch I will drop what I am doing to pay him back.

I guess I feel pretty lucky to live where I am.

Farming is a strange business isn't it. I have seen two neighbors head to head over who gets a piece of land that is up for rent-but after it is over best buds and helping each other out again.

Yea its really hard to make it on own cash flow. Wives all hold good paying jobs and Insurance otherwise lot of them wouldn't be farming simple as that. Banks are already stating due to input prices several loans will not get pd this season. Surwe glad I back out when i didi just wish done it sooner as far as rowcrops go. Got everthing sold except the 12row planter,just to small now days in my area.

If I had neighbors who had nothing better to talk about than how I planted my corners I guess I wouldn't care much what the heck they thought.

As to the comment about planting with 16-row equipment or don't bother-if a guy can get done with 6 or 8 rows then why go bigger? Seems like a waste of money to do nothing more than impress the nieghbors.

thats just the way it is in my territory. I don't know how it pencils out either with the dollars tied up for week or too use. Crp land is where you really hear the complaints also. Just glad I don't do that anymore anyway. Every thing is big in my area now.another 24row unit left last week. It will take him a whole 3 days to put all his crop in. Says he saves fuel. You figure it out?

Me too, probably made a lot of folks around here mad; but sure didn"t ever do it intentionally.

However, the practice of throwing sticks at people time and time again really wears on a feller.

Allen unless you want to see new equipment assembles and baling all the time thats what you would see and that does get old in hurry far as pictures. Same as looking in the farm magazines isn't that thrilling.

It takes practice, but they can be harvested on the corners. All the feilds are planted like this in our area, and I'm getting pretty good at chopping around a corner like that. Almost impossible with a 1 row head, but now that we have a 2 row, it's not as bad. It's not actually hitting it with the head that's hard, it's the wagon that runs down the next row most of the time. Only thing we combine on our farm is oats.
