Have an opportunity to purchase a New Holland 664 with net wrap. Only bale about 400 bales an year for personal use. Never used one of these before. Is there a great advantage to using the surface wrap, how much longer will the bale last (in Texas), how much more does the net cost over twine? Appreciate the info.

Glad you asked ,Roy. I am trying to decide the same thing. All the comments these guy's have said, are the same as everything I've heard locally. Fast, pretty, and slick! Sounds like the dream girl from high school. Time savings at harvest vs. hard to get off in winter, pretty vs. functional. Quality? Are you going to store inside like you did before? or leave outside? It should all come down to dollers and cents. How bad do you want to be modern? Good luck!

The largest hay auciton in Iowa is contemplating no longer selling twine wrapped round bales. The quality difference and value is marketedly different between the two types of bales.

We've been using net wrap on our own hay (fed to cows) on about 600 bales a year since '98 and we wouldn't consider going back to twine. Our hay is stored outside and the new wrap saves more than enough hay to pay for the higher cost. Also when baling the wrap is enough faster than twine that is is actually cheaper to use.

I am sure location makes a difference but in my area the net wrap is the only way to go,keeps hay much better and if seling it no way would Iuse string again. If it is only for your own use and just feeding to yur animals then the string would work

Have used both. Net is $200-250 a roll and much higher than twine. If you are baling to feed cows, then I suggest the twine, much quicker to cut and pull. If you are selling hay to be hauled then the net holds the bale together better. If you are baling bales to just look good, then net will make them look better, but those old cows don't seem to look at the bales. The twine is much cheaper and quicker in my opinon. I now use twine only, no more net.
Good luck...

In my area net costs about $200-250 a roll which is about 10 times more then twine. As far as lasting longer I don't really think it help make it last any longer
