OK, this had been stitting around at my grandfathers for a very long time. He was going to give it to the neighbors for their landscaping project (they thought it would look good in the yard). I had never looked at it closely and when we drug it out I saw that it was a JD #3 and decided there was no way he was going to give it away, this thing needs restoration.

OK now the details. It is basically intact. All the main parts apear to be there and the sickle has no missing teeth. It has been converted for tractor use. I don't know much about these things at all. If anyone can point me in the way of pictures, manuals, parts, or any other info it would be greatly appreciated.

You should be praised for wanting to save a part of history. A lot of people use them as yard art, but there are a lot of people out there that realizes that history is passing by. A neighbor's son began to collect/rebuild horse drawn equipment instead of tractors. Again, I praise you and your wanting to rebuild the JD mower..
Good Luck..

My grandfather used this to clear the high grass at his place when he first built his home, used it a few times to cut hay for his horses.

I will probably do 2 different bars, one for use behind a tractor, another the correct horse draw bar.

Should work well be cutting down my food plot, stuff gets so high a regular lawnmower gets clogged up. LOL

I'd say let the neighbor have it. The good will and your grandfather's word are worth way more than an old mower.

Do you realize that the way he says it is now that is a $500 mower as sets and restored in the possibly $900 range or higher, the No. 4 mower was 10 times more popular and even those in top shape are in the $1000 range for coluctores or for use in Amish areas

Not finding info for the No. 3 JD sickle mower listed on their site but contact JD Publications at 800-522-7448 or from their site. Operators Manual for No. 3 sickle mower is OMH51045 but don't have number for parts book.

You can also search here at YT on column to left under Galleries and Implement Photos and probably see some pics of one. Also search archives at JD forum or implement alley here.

Well if that's what he told them but they should realize the value of it too and never think about getting rid of it or selling it later before asking you about it. Yard art... It's better than seeing it go for scrap metal but some of it that is nice needs to be restored but sometimes that doesn't happen either. I got a No. 4 mower mower and got it all fixed and working to use behind old tractors and have too much fun using it working the tractors some and never got it painted yet.
