Going to have to redo grass fields this late summer ,going to kill grass and weeds with round up then work the ground with disk ground is sandy soil. Saw a disk for sale down the road 12' wide we have a 55 hp tractor 4wd is the tractor big enough to pull at the proper speed? It is an off set type of disk weathered needs some work it has 46 16'' blades some are broken needs some tlc ,and what would be a fair price Thanks Mark

If this is a offset with one gang in front and one gang in back traveling apart at diverging angles as oppossed to a double gang in front and back like a normal double disk then you would have no chance of pulling that with a 55 hp tractor. If it is a offset disk like we call it around here it is a primary tillage tool and really heavy and a 12' would require around a 100 horses to pull it. If it is a normal 12' double disk then you can probably pull it. I used to pull a oliver 10' with a JD 60 and that is hardly 40 horses.

Need some clarifying info from you. What do you call an "offset" disk? How could an "offset disk" be 12 foot and have "46" disk blades on it? I have a 7 1/2 footer with 20 disks (10 each gang) that I pull with 65 PTO HP tractor. I can barely pull it, actually need 10 HP per foot on good offset disk.
As they said in the movie Cool Hand Luke "What we have here is a failure to commicate".

In my experience, offset discs will have at least a 22" blade, if not a 26 or 28. Mine is a 9', with 10" blade spacing, and 26" blades. That's taking a 70 PTO hp FWD to get around half decent on light soil, and little grade. You aren't going to even touch a 12' offset with a 55 hp tractor. If it's a 12' tandem disc, then you'll probably get around with it OK in good conditions, but I don't think you'll set the world on fire. The tractor will be working, and working hard and that's assuming that it's a real tractor and not some of the newer lightweight or jap stuff.

Depending on how heavy the disc is and how light/heavy your soil is a 12' may be too much. I had a 12' with a 60hp which it handled in my sand no problem. If I got in to the heavy peat and black dirt and I needed to work with the heals up, she really had a hard time with it. I now have a good 10' and she handles it like a dream and I am able to keep the speed in the heavy soil. Better not to max out the tractor to imp. I would say get a 10'

Do you mean 46 blades or 36 blades? Something doesn't sound right here. A 10ft disk with narrow spacing would usually have 32 blades, so a 12 foot would be 36 blades, tops. At 16" the blades are probably worn down, they must have been at least 18-20 inch original. If the disk is otherwise good and not bent up with bad bearings etc, see if you can buy it for a good price, keeping in mind that you will have to replace the blades eventually but can get some use out of it in the meantime.

Seen a Int. sell at auction the other day for 450.00. It was not well attended and it was easy to see why, that disc was the best thing there and it had not been treated lightly. A big hunk of iron bolted on the rear to make it heavier. Seen 3 blades that had been cut down with a torch so they would be the same size as the rest, not even ground sharp. All depends on where you are and who is bidding.

If it is an ofset with 16" blades it is completely wore out, should be 22" or 24", an ordinary finnishing disk will have 18" blades and if that would be down to that 16" size even on that they would all have to be replaced

mark,a 12 foot offset should have 22 inch blades probably.seems well used.new blades are costly.big $$$$$$$ to replace 46 of them.i would have to pass on that one i think.i just bought a 10.5 foot heavy plowing disc. an ih 500.i had to give $2500.00.ten years ago you couldnt give one away.in my part of the country a lot of crp ground has opened up and guys are know looking for sod busting discs so they have become hi dollar equip. you should watch some sales one will come up soon.....barry

Should be able to pull to pull the disk ok. Dont know about price. Saw a good 12"offset sell for $600.but that was 10 yrs ago.
