Questions: New Idea Hay Rake MF Drill

I am looking at a Avco/New Idea #403 Hay Rake and was wondering what years they were made? It's in very good shape and they are asking $650. Is that a good price? Are they a good rake? It is ground driven by a rubber belt, more like a round cord. The people also have a Massey-Ferguson #33 11x7 grain drill. What years were they made and are they a reliable machine? They are asking $800 for it and it is a excellent shape. It is mechanical lift. Thanks!

i put some of these together as new idea ford hay rakes at that time were similar enough to make me think they were same thing . this was in to mid 1970's they seemed to be good machines the dealer i worked for sold a lot of them

Well, you're right in that NI did make some equipment for Ford. We used to run a Ford 535 haybine, then when the frame ripped in 1/2 on that one we picked up a New Idea 290, and the Ford is the parts machine. Needless to say, it's quite the colorful machine in the feild. I'm not completely sure when they were made, but my dad thinks early 70's. Makes sense they would use the entire line-up.

Ford later went to Owatonna for some equipment, including the haybines. Bad decision, because the reel was smaller and spun faster, wrapping long stuff right around it. Now we're looking at a Hesston 1014+2, 12 footer. Just want to get done quicker....

Joel, I have a New Idea rake with the round belt drive, a fellow gave it to me to get it out of his bush where it had sat for years, I greased it, put better tires on it, 12 new tines and its works great. Lots of stuff available for them in the way of parts. I would guess around 1960 when these came out. They do do a good job, lots of adjustment for the basket and I think easily maintained. I guess a workingside rake would bring 650..try an offer of $450
