There's been an add in the local paper for a IH 990 moco. Are these machines any good? They have it listed at $300, so it's possibly junk. I thought it may be worth taking a look at to see though. What kind of horsepower does it take to run one?

My only tractor is a Farmall M, supposed to have 36 pto horsepower. So that will be the limiting factor. I may drive over and see what it looks like if I get a chance.

Thanks,

I got one last year and it's pretty good so far . But another place to look for wear is the pivot point for the upper roll support on the right side . Mine is worn out which allows that plate to move out beyond the lower plate that controls the roll gap . It's a fairly easy fix if you have a welder or better yet a local welding shop with a plasma cutter . Take off the upper support plate and cut out the old pivot ( It's just a piece of pipe ) and weld in a new piece . But getting the support off can be tricky . I've looked at a number of 990's and they all seem to have the problem . One guy did it even easier by just welding a piece of angle to hold the support over where it belongs as the roll comes down .

I hooked my M up to it to test run it a couple weeks ago after I put all new guards on it but since my lift-all doesn't work I won't be able to use it to mow with till I get the pump rebuilt or a junkyard version .

If it has rubber on rubber rolls it should last a long time , if rubber on steel check the spirals closely for welds coming loose . Be prepared to replace the teeth on the tine bars and maybe the tinebar bushings and guide bearings , the guards , the sections if need be , check the drive pin for tightness on the sickle head , the auxilliary drive bearings and re-adjust everything per specs ( manuals available at case/IH ) . It's a super simple machine to work on but some parts are not available anymore . I had to reset the sickle register and getting the wobble box loose was a chore but once I got it to move I took it out and checked it and all was good so I don't know what that's like to rebuild . Just get the set bolt underneith adjusted right because the lower bearing rides on it . The manual explains what I mean . These are most of the wear places and just need checked out .

Sorry for the long post . I like the 990 but it's the only moco I've owned . I've looked a deere's and new hollands and hestons but this one APPEARS to be the simplest of them to work on and it can swath and windrow which some of the others can't . And for that price if it isn't totalled it'll make your money back in a season or two . If it were me I'd go for it . ...Randy

We used a 990 9' for many years, they were an excellent machine, but remember they are getting pretty old now. As I recall, made sometime in the mid to late 1970's.

I bought a 7 foot one at a consignment sale last year for $250. It worked but I've put ,about, another $250 in normal wear parts in it.
First moco I've had so can't compare it with other makes. I like it. Paid for itself in hay saved.

Manual states "30 horse power minimum" for both 7 and 9 foot models.

they are excellent machines. they only require about 35-40 horsepower but more will not hurt. you should check to see if the wobble box mounts are still in good shape and also check to see if the bearings have gone bad on the rollers the bearings can cost quite a bit to replace and the wobble box mounts can be fixed easily if you are a good welder.
