I picked up a nice planter to restore. I have two things I need help with. 1st; There is a arm (rod) about 4' long with a hook on one end and a large spring on the side. This arm or rod, pins on the underside of the tongue about halfway down. I don't know what it is for or what it could hook to. 2nd; How dose this implement lock in the travel position? Thanks for any help!!

With the clutch lift, once you pull the rope to raise it out of the ground you can travel with it. The planter units can be raised higher for travel by lifting up on them and hooking the lifting chain (for each planter unit) into a notch on the chain roller. Unless you"re traveling down a road this isn"t really needed. I"m not really sure what the rod and spring under your tongue are for. This is a small chain that runs from the rear of the planter that has a small hook on it that attaches to the front of the hitch. This controls which direction your marker arms drop. An owners manual would be a good investment and they are still pretty common. I believe you can still get reprints from John Deere. If you have a GOOD John Deere parts man he can still find NOS parts thru their system. I restored a 290 planter and my dealer bent over backwards finding me lots of NOS parts. I just used my 490 to plant about 5 acres of corn and it worked like a champ. Good luck to you and most of all have FUN!

Does your planter have the optional hydrolic cylinder lift or the standard clutch lift? Does it have the A frame type hitch or the pipe pole type hitch? What other attachments does it have? Down pressure assist? Disc seed openers? Fertilizer? Disc fertilizer openers? Row leveling tine tooth harrow attachment? Rubber tire or steel wheel? With this information I can possibly help you.

The reasion I was asking those questions is to date the planter since they were made from 1942 to 1956 with a lot of changes along the way. On the seed openers the standard seed opener was a shoe opener with double disc openers as option, also the standard fertilizer opener was an attachment shoe on the back of the seed opener shoe and placed the fertilizer on top of the seed, then there was the optional single disc fertilizer opener that placed the fertilizer 2" to the side and 2" below the seed. A frame hitch is the older version, also steel wheels were the oldest with that option avaible for a while after the rubber tire on spoke wheels came out, First ones on 16" rubber then later on 15" rubber, then on the latest planters they had a demountable pressed steel disk wheel. The dowm pressure attachment was a unit that fastened to the rear of the frame and was conected to the press wheels thru a series of pipe bars and springs. The only thing I can think of for that piece is if it would have had a harrow attachment that the operators manual does not show on at one time and it does have a transport link on the lifting parts but it is too hard to describe but looks like a short rod that you reposition. I just have before me one of the later planter models, not my parts book that would show a lot more information but your planter would be a later model and there should be a serial number stamped in the top of the rear part of the frame on the left side.
