cultivator... for 1964 JD 3020 row crop

What type of cultivators were the John Deere Dealers selling for the 1964 3020? Was it the same for the 3010 or different in case I find one someone was using on a 3010. Too, any idea what I should pay for one if one is out there. Thanks.

I have a model 40 JD front mount can have cheap and is awfully good unit was alweays shedded till last summer

Rick; Where you located? I have a 40 T and if the price is right would put that on just to have another use for the 40, sets around to much to suit me. If I dont find a use for it soon I may trade or sell the little bugger. Nice tractor though, 3 point and all.

Mike, I don't know where your located, but cultivators age a dime a dozen in the south as they are no longer used. You can get a RM6 for about 200 bucks, if you only want 4 rows, cut the outside 2 off!

I have a JD 6 row 3 pt hitch that I use as a 4 row. It works great on my MF 175 which I believe is simalar in size to your 3020. Paid $400 sounds bettter if you can find one for $200.

they also had a front mounted AT40 which is an updated T-4. or newer than that they made an FM model cultivator of which i have a good one for sale . RK in Iowa

In 1964 most of the cultivators being sold, no matter what color or brand, were front mount cultivators, 4 row and few 6 row. The 3 point rear mount cultivators were just beginning to gain popularity so a few of them were sold also.
Cultivators are just about obsolete now, some still see occasional use, but for the most part they have been parked in the fence row. I wouldn"t think you should need to pay more than a couple hundred for a good one.

I disagree again. Darnit! :>)

In 1964 there were very few front mounts sold. Rear mounts started coming out in the mid and late fifties.

Since you and I are both red for instance, when the two-points hit the field, the front mounts began to disappear because they weren't nearly as "forgiving" as the rear-type units. Cultivator blight just about stopped when the farmers started using the rear kind.

Just my recollection of a time gone by,

Yes, but, in 1964 a brand new 3020 came to our farm to be an addition to the 4010 that dad had also purchased new. All of the cultivating was done with a 4 row front mount on the 4010, which had been purchased new with the 4010. The only rear mount cultivators in use in my part of the world were the small 2 row jobs on the back of the little gray and red Fords, and you could count those on one hand. The rear mounted cultivators for the bigger farms really didn't start showing up until around 1970.

RustyFarmall,I agree with you on the '70s for rear cultivators but they still weren't as easy to use as frt. mount cult. in conture terraces and point rows,just easier to put on tractor. Back then farmers bedded in rows before planting. It was common practice to have cult on front to plow out weeds and planter on rear to seed. Now everyone just flat plants and uses Round-up. My Dad would never understand or approve. Tx Jim

Different part of the world, I guess.

We started with the rear mounts, four row wides clear back in '55. By the 70s we had traded 5 or 6 times, all rear mounts.

I think the difference is that where we live, there are hills, and the row crops are planted on the contour. Thos earlier rear mounts just wouldn't follow those contours very well, the folks that tried them ended up with too much cultivator blight.

The rear mount was that RG4 trash drag wasn't it? My opinion an RG4 is worth exactly It's weight in scrap iron!

We had rear mounted cultivators here in Georgia. Most small farmers had the front mounts on the Farmall A's and John Deere A's & B's. Most equipment was 2 row up until the 70's, then everybody went to 4 row and then 6 rows around the early 80's. There is probably 5 fultime farmers left within a 20 mile radius of me left, 2 being dairy farmers.
