How close to set crimper rollers?

I"ve got some timothy/clover that has taken off!Its knee high and still a month from cutting.I have never done red clover,its stems and leafs are huge.I have a moco with rubber/metal rollers.I have never been satisfied with its crimping on alfalfa stems but this red clover has me worried so now I want to make sure its adjusted properly.How close should the rollers be?I"ll turn up the preservative on this stuff but it looks to be a problem.Any suggestions other trhan the rollers welcome.

Mine stay set the same for clover as alfalfa.

Reason being that the clover stem is larger so it will crimp more without changing anything.

I'd try it at the same setting as alfalfa first. There is no magic setting for a given crop because of the variation in maturity from when one guy cuts to another, ground speed, etc. I personally have found haybines a lot harder to plug up than a lot of guys make it out to be. Nearly the only time I've plugged one is when I've unknowingly broken a guard and snagged a big wad of material before I realized it. Even then they'll usually clear themselves if you stop.

Thanks guys.I am wondering if I even have them set close enough for the alfalfa because it doesnt crimp it that good.

Check your roll pressure . Get that right and set the rolls so you can just see a sliver of daylight between them all the way across . I have a old IH 990 that works real good after I set the roll pressure right . You don't want the rolls to touch when turning empty though , at least on a 990 . And you don't want too much space in there either . And since rolls are probably never perfectly straight you have to spend a lot of time under there turning and looking , so try and get them as close as possible without touching . Good luck ...Randy
