While recently visiting friends in northern Vermont we stumbled on the apparent remains of a side delivery rake in a former field. They were in various parts and surprisingly little rusted considering that they've been there at least 25 years. There were two iron wheel rims that apparently were from wood wheels. Any idea when the last wood wheel rakes were made? Thank you.

I don"t think there ever was a side delievery rake made with wood wheels, the first ones back about the late teens-early 20"s were all steel spokes with steel rims, I have a rake that I am dating to 1922 and the only wood on it is in the rake bars to hold the teeth in place. The dump rakes that predated the side delievery also all had steel wheels

Thank you. I wonder what I may have seen. I'd say the iron rings were definitely wheel rims and they were not parts of steel wheels. Perhaps there was more than one implement there. Some of the parts were half buried. The curved pieces were definitely rake tines. Now I wish I'd paid more attention to what was there although it would have taken quite a bit of effort to pull more pieces out of the ground.
