Sprayer needed or not

Just got back from the VA hospital checkup that went ok. Stopped at my favorite candy store on the way back, (JD Dealer) and they have a used 40' trailer sprayer (PTO) that I can have for the low low sum of $500.00. Now that must be a good deal. Question, do I really need it for my 35 acres of alfalfa/grass mix? Should I plan on investations and buy now? Remember, I am in northern MN where we freeze out many unwelcome visitors. (Not friends or mosquitoes). Bob

I never spray alfalfa for insects anymore, just not worth the hassle and cost for the gain. With that said, $500 for that spraying is a bargain. I've got that in mine in nozzles and new lines. I couldnt imagine raising alfalfa without one. With that said, Im a notil kind of guy. I do like a dormant spray with gramoxone in Feb on alfalfa to clean up henbit and chickweed, usually every other year.

First sounds to me like dealer just wants rid of it. One that size in my area is not worth hardly anything, they need to be 60 or eightyft booms at least. I do all small square baling now and have veer sprayed alfalfa. Yes your first cut will usually have some rough in it but once you start cutting that solves that. Cutting every 20 some days solves the other problems usually. Waste of $500 in my eyes. If you do have to spray it is still cheaper to have it done in my area. Do you have all your permits to spray current and have your chemical license so you can buy the stuff.

I have grown alfalfa hay in NY for decades and haven't needed to own a sprayer other than a spot sprayer garden type. Timely cutting will take care of most of your bug problems year in and year out. Same goes for most weeds. Around here it costs about nine dollars an acre to have it done by the local ag center plus materials. Rarely needs it though. Don't be scared by the publications. They tend to deal in worst case scenerios. Ask established farmers around you.

I spray my own herbicides and I know it's probably not good for a person. I do not spray pesticides. If it will kill a living thing it is probably not good for people. I would hire somebody with the proper equipment to protect themselves from drift, fumes ect.

I really can't see what you'd be spraying on that crop. Mowing should take care of weeds.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, I have been talking to the county agent and reading books/pamphlets. But this part of MN has at least the following, Alfalfa and tarnished bug, potato leaf hoppers and the variegated cutworm along with the ever present grasshopper. All thses have some insectiside that will aid in control if they become to populated in stands. Like I said, I'm new at this so if there is little or no benifet in attempting control then I dont need a sprayer. ? . opinons?

34 years in this strong dairy and alfalfa area and I've never known anyone to spray a hay field. Recently there's some talk about bugs, and spraying them, as well as with the advent of RR alfalfa there is the possibility of spraying for weeds, but it is very limited, and I know of no one doing it. I think you'd gain more by using the sprayer money to buy or build a packer to pull behind the drill to get a good stand (while reducing pounds seeded per acre). Used to seed 15-18 pounds straight alfalfa, but with a packer it's down to 10-12 and a better stand. Six pounds at today's price is a good $30 per acre less cost. I used to seed 40 acres every year, so the savings are significant.

IF the sprayer is in good shape, doesn't need pump work, hoses, valves, tips are all in good working order, then it's a pretty fair deal. However, if it needs work, then that's probably all it's worth, and mabey then some. Remember that it costs a lot to put a big machine back in shape compared to a little one, at least when you're buying more hose, tips, valves, etc. The other side of that is that you would do all you're spraying on a few tanks of water.... That can be a good thing or a bad thing. Big can be a lot to manuver... harder to guesstimate how much water is in the tank... etc. It can be a lot of spray to run off somewhere if you have extra, and that costs... So, I dunno the answer. I looked at a 500 gallon Hardy last Saturday. About the same size as you're looking at. Price was about the same. Tempting... but I let another fella take that one home.... For what it's worth.....

MN Bob,
Glad the checkup was good - that's always good news!!
By 40' trailer sprayer I'm assuming you mean it has 40' booms. Must be a good sized tank on that puppy!! Don't know if 35 acres would warrant such a big sprayer, but the price seems pretty good and ya' sure don't have to fill it up all the way!! Of course, I don't know the size of the tank either!!! I'm using a 200gal 3pt sprayer with 20' booms and wish I had something a little bigger as it seems I have to refill at the most unopportune moments! I'm spraying fields (hay) that border woods and spot spraying 50 - 60 acres - depending on how bad the weeds get.

$500.00 is a good price - a new 50gal model costs around $350.00 from Rural King. (pump NOT included) If your's comes with a pump - where is this place at???

OOPS, should have said 40' boom on a trailer. Has almost new flotation tires. Dealer has been pretty fair with me and I think this is another break. When he told me 500 his salesman said he was expecting to get 6 to 7oo. Owner says that is the price I told you to get, I am making a one time offer. I know he called the previous owner and talked to him before giving me the price. Maybe I should jump on it. Oh yes, not sure of the gal. but the tank is BIG. Bob

I got a 300 gal, 40 foot boom sprayer for $300 at auction, but needed to add filter, and it"s single tires, and while works well, it has seen wear. Sounds like you have a good deal there. I cover about 24 acres with one tank; you can adjust acres covered with diff tips, diff speed, so you can change that, but 10 gal an acre is a common starting point. That"s a big sprayer for your acres, you could get by fine (maybe even prefered) with a 100 gal, 20 foot boom, 3pt unit. But, one has to go with the deals one finds, new the 3pt unit will be 3-4x the money....

I"m in southern MN, we get aphids now, 1/3 to 1/2 the years. Thjey suck alfalfa dry. Won"t affect your grass, but when ignored, I got 3 round bales off 8 acres of alfalfa, a full cutting.

However, as one mentioned, I"m uncompfortable spraying acres of insecticide, I call the coop & let them do it with thier filtered cabs.....

If you have weeds, the sprayer is good for that too, but mostly around here you can out-mow & crowd out weeds in solid alfalfa; nothing to spray on mixed stands, you"ll either kill the grass or kill the alfalfa; can go after the boradleaves in a solid grass stand tho.

Just random thoughts.

By the way - I'm also using mine to spray ammonium sulfate and other liquid fertilizers...
I've even watered the garden with it!

Spray a known area with plain water, and note how full the tank was when you started and how many gallons it takes to refill it to the same level. Divide that by how many acres you covered to get gallons per acre. Keep speed and pressure uniform while doing this. 1/4 mile by 33 feet wide is one acre. 1/2 mile by 16 1/2 feet (one rod) is one acre. If you live on a lightly traveled gravel road, go a quarter mile.....BTDT. If your boom is 30 or 45 feet, etc, you can do the math after you know how many gallons you put out.
