I want to know what kind of trators and 3-point disc mowers you guys use to cut hay. I have a Vicon CM247 that is a 7'10" cut that I bought new last year. I have a Kubota M4700 that is 42pto hp and it will pull it but it is a load when it is 95 degrees out. So I am gonna try it on my Oliver 1955 this year and see how that works. It will be way overkill on the horsepower but I guess it will work. I am somewhat nervous about pulling that size cutter with a tractor that big. What kind of combo's are you guys running?

I don't think the 1955 will be to awful much. We use a NH 1431 discbine cutting 13' for our hay. 100 horse will do it but if you want some speed 135 is good and 180 is better. Case 1270 with 2590 engine tuned to 180 horse loves that discbine. Even in first cutting you can move at 8 mph. Lighter cuttings and 10 mph is possible just to darned fast for the driver to stay in his seat and the mower head to stay on the ground unless you have smooth as glass fields.

WE have owned 7'10 Gehl (vicon)'s for 26yrs now.

the first one for 10 this one 16. We've use a 530 JD worked fine.. whats that 35hp???

we've used a 285 massey workded great. thats 80hp
we've used a 4430 JD (last dyno'ed at 150)
and for the last 7yrs we've used a 630JD... about 42HP...

I think your KUBOTA was just fine.. and your 1955 would be great--- just tall for mowing under tress LOL!

running 2 9 ft kuhns ..one on a 2840 and the other on a 401b...have tried others even shaft drive but kuhn holds up better ... have nice day may god bless this usa

I have used 7'10" Vicons for a number of years, but have always used a 65 HP tractor which has no trouble pulling it. Another issue is having enough weight on the front of the tractor so the front wheels will have grip when turning left with the blade picked up. Suspect the Kubota is a little light for that.

The Kubota has a loader on it and it handles the weight good, even has the power to pull it, but the cooling system comes up a little short when it is hot and the conditions are heavy. I know the 1955 will handle it like it is not there, it is just a lot of overkill. Guess to much is better than not enough?

Pulling a 5408 (7"10" shaft drive bar) New Idea with a 7610 Ford (or 7710 sometimes if I"m not baling with it) and another with a 5600 Ford at my dad"s place. 86 hp factory on the 7 series, a shade over 60 on the 5600. Pump on the 7610 is turned up 1.5 turns, and it makes a difference esp with the disc mower.

Vicon recommended Power requirements for CM247 is 46 PTO HP. You are underpowered. Did the dealer not tell you this? This is a good mower matched to the correct tractor. Vicon mowers do take more HP than shaft drive mowers because of the Oil Bath cutterbar design and 3 blades per cutting head. Even the 5 disc Vicon model need 42 PTO HP and you are borderline for that machine. A HayMax 7'10" disc mower needs only 36 PTO HP.

I really am interested in a shaft drive mower in about a 7' model for my Kubota. But it'll take more boot to trade for a new one than I am willing to give. I've spent too much money all ready. I found some pretty decent 2 or 3 year old ones but buying a used disc mower makes me nervous, and I don't want to trade off my year old mower that has only cut about 60 acres for one that my have been abused. So I guess I'll try and put it on the big tractor. It has all the power and then some but is a lot more clumsy than the Kubota. But if no.2 is pulling a 7' with a 4020 that is not much different really? I'd really like to have one of those new pull type Vicons in a 9'2" model to put behind my Oliver, but it'll take 5000 big ones to trade and my small operation can't justify it.

We use a JD 4020 or 4320 to operate a 7"2" New Holland. We tried a MF 255 and it would not handle the mower on hillsides.
