Hello, I have a IH 37 baler I'm getting ready to try out for this year and was wondering what is the best string to run in it (plastic, sissal,..)?

To IHC 435; our 425 was new enough to have the Deering Knotter like a JD or NH , what does your 435 have? our 37 had the old McCormick knotter, the Mc Cormick makes a stronger knot but is more complicated so it's easier for the baler to miss. IH does not make quite as nice and square bale as JD.

Put in the "all twine" knotters from a 435 or 445 and you will have a dependable small baler. They have swinging knives that always cut the twine. Many machinery salvage yards have them for $100+ each and they will fit.

I have A 46 and would stay with sisal twine. Plastic may work if you would use the heavier twine not the 170. Keep your twine knifes razor sharp so they cut the twine clean should do all right. Also don,t run the old baler to fast maybe 60 strokes per 60 seconds.Keep it working but not over done. If the twine isn,t being cut all the way you may have to put a washer bettween the knife and holder to make it cut quicker. Lots of replies on the implement board about these old balers. I have a 27 which is a little smaller and it is a good machine. Not high capacity, but it does well for me on 25 acres. I run mine with a Farmall M. It will make 50 to 60 pound bales. They work good if you don't crowd them too much. I've had the best luck with sisal.

My dad bought a new 37 in 1967 worked good for 2 years and then all we did was fight it until 1980 when he bought a new IH 425 english baler which was an excellent baler, our neighbor had a 47 which worked well. Take that 37 to a consignment, dump it and get a 24T or 336 JD! Just my advice!

my uncle had (still has) a 37 - our 46 was better - and neither one was too good
ours would tie just as many with plastic as it would with sisal -

his would tie one in ten - so i wish you luck.....
