My Dad has one he bought in the 60's. It is a real good unit that did a lot of work. Has a seal out now due to my Uncles abuse so isn't used much.
It was dark red when new as I remember. They were made in Ottawa Kansas. There was someone about a month ago looking for the factory on this post, but don't know what they found out.

Hi, I am probably the person who posted trying to locate information on the Ottawa Farm Chief post hole auger you made reference too. I have run about every "trap line" I can think of up to now and I don't believe they were made in Ottawa, Kansas. There is a farm equipment manufacturer located in Ottawa, Kansas with the Ottawa name and I talked to the factory manager about my auger and he indicated they never made such a unit and weren't even in business when the unit was likely made for the fast hitch IHC tractors. He indicated they receive numerous calls every month from folks generally trying to find replacement parts for the Ottawa Farm Chief brand of equipment. He said they did considerable research trying to locate who the original manufacturer might have been and who might have taken them over. They were never able to find out anything very solid in their efforts. He indicated that he thought they were up in Minnesota somewhere and might have been absorbed by Westendorf. I haven't been able to follow up with the Westendorf folks so don't know if that will bear any fruit or not.
Does the auger your dad has have the lower part of the original decal remaining? I would like to reproduce the decal for a restoration on the one I have but am missing that part of the decal. Probably only the bottom inch or less is missing as I have everything from there up which is readable once the re-paint is scratched off. Anything you could provide relative to the content of this part of the decal would really be appreciated. Thanks for your post, Hal

I recently acquired one as well. Mine has no paint at all but the tiny bit of remnants look like it was painted silver at one time.

Mine also has a serial number tag which reads "Ottawa Chief" and "Ottawa Mfg. Company Ottawa, Kansas". I will try to get a photo of this tag.

A quick search finds that people seem to think that this company was founded in 1906 and built engines, saws, tractors and other farm and forest machinery. Here are some links that I found:
