PLanted 10 acres(timothy and Alfalfa) in the fall following wheat. Lots and lots of volunteer wheat and some weeds. My Father in law has cattle and always needs hay. If he cuts, rakes, and round bales(his equipment) what should I charge him? Enough to cover fertilizer? Or more?

I small square bale for horses so this first cutting won"t do me very much good as most of the horse people are picky and admittedly it won"t be without weed and wheat.

Keep in mind this guy always pushes the limits and without restrictions the bales would be as big as my house(well not that big but close). Of course no way to weigh either...

Like the others have suggested, probably about half. As to the fertilizer, it realy makes no differnce how much you have invested.

The going price for good grass hay in our part of the world(Western Montana) is $30/T on the stump.

Why not charge for the fertilizer costs (spreading too), and then a bit for the use of the land... a portion of the years rent mabey. Don't know what that would equate to in your area, but in mine it would be a pittance anyway. Mabey a hundred to two hundred bucks on the 10 acres. Then he gets the crop, and you're clear of it. I gather that that's what you're after? Don't want to be too difficult with family. It doesn't help that you have someting that you don't want yourself.....

Got to consider the family ties and who wants a squabble among the family. 50/50 may be a good way to go but what to you do with the hay? If his baler makes 5' or whatever just estamate the weight, tell him you will give him a 10% break on that and take what you can get. From what you describe you couldnt cut and bale yourself and make a profit after fuel, twine etc. let alone labor.
