A friend a 4 row jd planter for sale. I can probably get it for $100- $150 and was thinking about cutting it in half and making 2 planers that are 2 row 3pt. I dont know the modle of it or if the packing wheels run the plates. I was thinking about keeping one and selling the other. Is this a good idea or am I wasting my time?

I am in process of doing the same thing. I just bought a JD toolbar, 60 in long, to make upa 3 pt. version. I am also doing a pull type, that will have fertilizer units on it. There is a guy in Croswell, Michigan, that has made up 50 2 row units in the last 2 years. Does a nice job too. - He advertises in the yt ads. (I am using JD70 units)

Waste of time, no money maker. The only extra parts you have are two planter units, no drive, frame, markers, etc. Pull them off, save for parts, torch the frame.

Where are you located?
I'll do the welding for you for the other half.

Unless they are the unit planters in CANNOT be done as they all run off the ground wheels with a gearbox of some kind to get your planter spacing drive. I have seen pictures of those others mentioned by anouther poster and if you look closely at the pictures the ones that I have seen he has no provision to drive the plates on them with so I don't have any idea how a buyer ever was able to use them. with all other than unit planters you would have to make provisions for to put one of the carry ground wheels on each thru a gear box and you would need two (2) gear boxes so you would have to go out and buy an extra planter to get that extra gearbox setup and before you would be done with all the fabrication and extra parts you would have to purchase and your time you would have to be able to sell them at over $2,000 apiece to break even on your cost. The ground drive wheel would have to be able to be set up to float on uneven ground to keep the openers in the ground. Then most people would want markers so that would be a verry hard job to design and make them and you would also have to buy anouther planter for the second set of them. If they are the unit planter each would drive from it's own press wheel and so you could cut down the tool bar they are mounted on and possibly get enough of the bar itself to make anouther bar but then you would still have to make the 3 point mast. there were markers made to fit on the front of the tractor for those planters that did not have markers built into them. That Idea is a pipe dream.

I don't see much money in it by the time you are done, but they do have a chain & sprockets added to the press wheel if you look closely.... A bit of engineering & parts involved in doing that right....

Leroy, I know how at least one 3point conversion was done with a 494. The guy welded a sprocket onto an end of the axle shaft of the press wheel, then rigged up a chain to a cross-shaft, to which he had the planter drive shafts connected like on the original planter. Problem--there was no provision for changing seed spacing. It really dismays me that people who don"t know any better are being tricked into spending a lot of money for these things on eBay, and what they are getting are poor excuses for planters.

Michael,

I found your post to be particularly funny. About 30 years ago, I bought two JD290 two row planters for $25.00 apiece and fabricated them into one four row planter. I thought I was really clever. I never even thought about going the other way.

Good luck with your project. Given enough time and money, you can accomplish virtually anything.

Dad did a similar thing with IH planters and a WD45 in the late 50's. Put the horse poles back on, hooked to a beam across the front of the tractor, lifted the planters with a beam across the rear lift arms. Couldn't use the check-row wire anymore, but really speeded up planting.

Michael, if the planter has model 70 or 71 units on it this can be done very easily. If the planter units are not driven off of the press wheels it is much more complicated but can be done. Look on ebay, there is a guy from Kansas the uses 494A style units and does a nice job.
