Papec model 11 hammer mill questions

I came across a model 11 papec hammer mill. Has two screens one is 3/4" and the other is 1/4". I'd like to grind ear corn is the larger screen O.K for ear corn? What is the smaller screen used for cracking shell carn? There also is a upper screen with about 1/4" holes in it that shows some damage how important is the use of the upper screen? One last question it is a pto drive so what PTO rpm should I run my tractor at?

The Papec hammer mills had two screens. The upper one is what they called a "retarding screen." The lower one is called the "grading screen." Supposedly the retarding screen worked to "rebound into hammers instead of moving with them." (This is from a flyer for a model X hammer mill.) In other words, it makes teh grain bounce around more in the mill. I would not think that the damage to the upper screen would significantly affect your use of it, unless it comes loose, of course.

Remember it this way- big screen is for animals with big mouths- cows, steers. (Coarse grind). Little screen is for animals with small mouths- pigs, chickens. (Fine grind). PTO machines are made to run at standard pto speeds. Can't grind feed at half-throttle.

Ear corn would do fine with the 3/4 screen. not sure about the upper screen but I suspect you will need it. Those hammermills run pretty fast and loose pieces will do bad things. Be careful.
