I recently purchased this planter, and this is the first time I will use it. Mine has the round seed boxes, and I have several of the plastic plates to use on it. Any ideas on which number plates to use with the sweet and field corn?

Also the fertalizer setting is on the smallest sprocket. Does that need to be adjusted to one of the larger sprockets?

Any other problems I should look out for on this planter?

Thanks, Nate

Thanks for the responses. I'm a greenhorn planting corn.

I will take my plates to the mill when I buy the corn. That way I can match what's on the bag to the plates I have.

In the mean time, I need a manual for my fertalizer setting. I have no idea what sprocket to use or wether my auger is high or low rate.

Nate

Medium is normal with both the high and low as options, same auger from the first 494 thru 494A and 1200 series

Most seed bags will tell you what plate to use, If your seed bag doesn't say which plate, then hold a seed in one of the plates cells, use the largest cell you can, but not large enough to fit two grains of corn in at the same time. I found that 24 cell plates work best because you can plant a little faster with them. You need a book for the planter in order to set your fertilizer and seed rates.

The number of the planter plate you need is going to be found on the seed bag. It varies depending on the size of the seed, small, medium, large, in either flats or rounds. You'll need an operator manual to determine proper sprocket settings for fertilizer, depending which augers are in your planter. Actual rate also varies with density of the fertilizer, but generally rated at about 65 pounds per cubic foot- so keep monitoring what is actually being applied.

ther are numerous plates to use with these planters. for corn there are 16 and 24 cell seed plates for various sizes of seed. also there are plates for flat seed or round seed. changing seed plates and/or sprockets will change seeding rates. the fertilizer rate is controlled by two things; sprocket selection and the type of auger in the fertilizer box.( i think there are low and high rate augers) the very first thing you should probably do is find a manual. using a planter requires many consultations to the manual, at least for me, dont believe i could operate one to any degree of accuracy without knowing the settings
good luck, I think the 1250 is a good planter.
