I am a first time tractor owner. I have a 25hp New Holland with Bush-Hog front end loader, 5' box blade, 5'disc harrow, 1 row cultivator, small boom and a 5ft bush-hog mower. I am Learning fast....found out you are not supposed to turn while pulling the disc with it in the ground! Just wondering if there are any other quick tips you could pass on about any of the above. I haven't hooked up the boom, mower, or box blade yet. I am wondering if there is a book for beginners on how to use farm implements, tractors etc. Any recommendations? Thanks, Jim

Locate an Operators Manual for your tractor and each piece of equipment you own...and READ them!

If you cannot locate an Ops manual, let's say for your disk, find one for a similar piece of equipment, most of what is there will apply, especially in terms of operation and safety precautions.

You should look for Nolan's post in the archives called The Misadventures of Bushhogging and check out the picture he posted showing what can happen if you aren't careful < www.mint.net/~girardin/oops8n.jpg>

Finally, check out the article called Choosing, Mounting and Using a Bush Hog Type Mower in the General Tractor Information section of the Article Archives listed under Research and Info on the left side of this page. It should be required reading for anyone using a bush hog.

Be Careful,

John

NEVER NEVER trust the front end loader to stay up or the lift pole. Never let yourself get under the pole or loader in the up position and think the hydraulic system will keep it up. Things fail and if you should be under it when it does you have a hard time reaching the controles to get it off you. Other words dead men don't move much. Act like that equipment is a snake and never trust it.

You might see if the local high school has an FFA chapter. They used to have courses on farm machinery and so on. Maybe you could get some books, pamphlets and whatever.

You are right in looking for sound advice. That ain't just software you're messing with.

Be careful.

Watch the turns with the bushhog too, and the cultivator. Keep the bucket round bottom edge rolled forwards when your moving unless you take it off out of the way. Don't be running fast with the loader in use, and always put it close to the ground as possible when using it, and don't make no quick turn.
Neighbor here while back had his bucket up and the lip forward, he hit a tree while he was looking back and the bucket caught enough to flip the tractor before he could get clutch pushed in. Don't let anybody especially kids ride on the tractor with you when you're operating the tractor especially with the bushhog.. Don't get off the tractor with the bushhog in gear. I nearly always turn the tractor off before dismounting, but at least take the pto out of gear.
Whatever you do be sure to not run the pto unless needed and turn it off when you get off the tractor. Don't let anyone walk beside the tractor or equipment. Take your time and be careful.
I live near a man that killed his 4 yrs old grandson with a bushhog, and it scares the heck out of me when I see anybody with a passenger or looker on near a bushhog. I know he did'nt mean to, but that baby is still dead.
You can be careful many times aday, but you only get killed once. So please be careful and when in doubt, don't do it.
