IH 56 planter markers need help

I have a IH 56 4 row corn planter I got this year .(I did have a jd 494) I am going to plant about 30ac of corn with it .But the markers do not work right .Me and my brother-in -law worked on it for 5hr last night and still can"t get it to work right.Can someone tell me where the balls on the marker chain are suppose to go .Is one side suppose to lock in the lift pulley when it is going up or are both balls suppose to be on the out side of the trip lever or are there suppose to be between the trip lever and the lift pulley .We can get it to work 2 or 3 times but after that the chains and balls get out of center (one side will go up higher then the other and the other side will stay down all the time after it does this a couple of time it won"t work right.)when you lift it up are both arm suppose to go all the the way up against the planter.
I have oiled everything good and the spring as working .See how I have never seem one work before i am just not for sure how it is suppose to work .
I would appreciate any help.
Also i am pulling it with a D-17 and it has a one way cylinder on the planter.

Well I worked on it all day and still is not working .sitting here thinking about it I think the chain might be to long or something.When you have one marker down the other one is about � the way up .So when you lift it up it takes all the chain on the up side out frist and by the time it starts to take up the down side it will run out of pick up before the ball can get to the trip .In short the chain does not go up evenly when you pick it up.
I should ask this do I have all the parts on it.A pick up pulley,2 trip pulley,trip arm and a spring in the trip arm.

I planted with a 58 iH planter for quite a few years but it's been a while ago so the memory is a littly foggy, but I do remember that the markers need to hang out a little when raised, to leave enough chain travel to get the balls through the switching mechanism. Im thinking about four to six inches of chain between the end of the planter frame and the bracket on the marker. When the planter is lowered the marker that is still raised will hang out a little more than it does when raised. Clear as mud? Everyone who has planted for many years automatically glances over his shoulder to check the marker every time the planter is dropped no matter what brand or age the planter is. Good luck, Jim

Had various planters over the Years. On 4 and 6 row ones,markers served to get caught in fencerow trees, stones, clods,...I mounted a horizontal pipe or angle iron or whatever was in the shop to the front of the tractor. I made the attachment to fit the weight bracket, so as any tractor could plant. Then I hung a length of chain down onto the previous row of corn. Chain was placed wide enough on the bar that when the chain was on top of last row, my spacing was correct. All of my drivers found that this worked very well. Cost was minimal in material and about a slow hour of shop time after supper one night; this after fighting with markers for too long...QR..

Ratskinner, from my manual"proper operation of the marker is obtained by connecting the chain lift as follows:Thread the lift chain half way through the lift arm pulley and then slide one chain lug A over each end of the chain close to the pulley. Now pull the ends through the alternator pulleys, chain guides and through the frame end rollers where they can be connected to the markers.
Locate the lift chain lugs 3 inches from the alternator case and secure them there with the drive pins as shown in the illustration Raise both left and right markers up and connect the chain to hold them up close to the frame end rollers, allow an equal amount of chain to extend at each end. BE SURE THE CHAIN IS FREE OF TWIST BEFORE IT IS CONNECTED The marker operates automatically as the planter is raised and lowered. The left and right markers raise and lower alternately. The lowered or working marker will be the one on the side toward the unplanted crop. Should the wrong marker come down when the planter is lowered raise and lower the planter a second time which will then lower the opposite marker.
Raise the Planter as high as it will go with the hydraulic cylinder and keep it there while the lift chain is being installed or adjusted. "A" that was mentioned is the dead center pulley where you would start from, I know you don't have the illustration but I think you will see where they go, get the planter up on the hydraulics and it should adjust, I don't know a whole lot about them, I have a 56 I-H 4 row planter but I don't plant a lot with it, never had problems with the markers...good luck, hope this helps...Mike in Exeter Ontario

I have one word of caution to offer. When your working with those lugs be careful! You can still buy the lug from the dealer but they are expensive. That is a role pin driven through the lug and through a link in the chain. If you beat on it too hard taking the role pin out, the lug will crack in half.

Once you get your markers adjusted they should work great.
