I just brought home a JD disk. Don't know the model but it is flexable and the rear gaings are held up by a chain. One of the wheels is really loose. I took it apart and the wheel bearings? looked ok. I've never worked on a JD before. The bearings seem to need to be shimed or some thing. Anyone know what I have and what it takes to fix it? I need it to Disk up about 5 acres and then sell it. I don't really like it.

KBA wheel type, was also avaible in drag type, Best all purpose disk ever made. They used 2 different type of wheel bearings. Does yours have disk wheels that use the tapered roller bearings like the other poster is refering to or the spoke wheels as I think you probably have that take a straight roller bearing and with the strait bearing there is no tightening to be done on them, only can check that all parts are there and not wore out. There should be a thin shell of bearing in hub for rollers to run against and they like to wear out and dissapere and then just a washer between both bearings and one or 2 on the outside ends of the bearings.

Sounds like it might be a model KBA

When you tighten up the bearing, is the nut on so far that it goes past the cotter key hole? Could add some spacer washers to take up that slack. But, that usually means the bearing itself is worn- even if it still looks good. Races also wear. Two new bearings and races would let it run decades.

It has the spoke type wheels. and the cage/roller barings. Is there something in the wheel hub to replace?

There is just a thin brass sleeve for replacement except for the bearings, The wheels were never tight like the tapered roller bearings, unless the bearing fell apart when you took it apart there is not much to do but put back together with just enough shim washers that you can get the pin in and fill with grease
