Has anyone built a boom pole that has a hydraulic swing on the pole and raises and lowers the mast with a cylinder like an engine hoist and also has a 12 volt winch on it that would lift maybe 4000 lbs ? I'm going to try and build one with stabilizer legs for the crane use part . I need something with some reach to clear large fallen trees out of the ditches and the three point by itself doesn't have enough movement . And with the swing I would only have to position the tractor once for multiple lifts . Any ideas or thoughts on this ? My tractors lift arms are supposed to lift 4000lbs according to the manual at 24" in back of the implement attaching points . I work for a stuctural engineer so he can do the math for me and a computer mockup to get the angles , weights and moment arms correct , but I think I could probably lift 4k out to about 8 - 10 feet with stabilizer legs and that would be plenty . The limiting factor being the upper link strength or to be even more accurate the bolts that hold the upper link attachment point on the back of the tractor . Of course I could always get another chain and drag them up the side of the ditch and tear up the grass and the gravel on the road and cause erosion then break my back trying to get them onto the trailer or truck . No , I like this idea . ...Randy

Don't forget that when you lift a heavey object behind the tractor, the center of rotation tends to be around the rear wheles of the tractor and the front end will lift off the ground unless it is ballasted. Be safe!

Randy,
I spent a lot of time trying to figure out the same thing and decided I was trying to reinvent the wheel. What I have been using, sucessfully, for several years now is a three point logging winch and an arch.

The winches are avaiable from a number of sources...look at Hakmet .com or Bailey's .com. The winches are avaiable for down to a 25 hp tractor up to over 100 hp. With a little common sense you will find you can set up in one place and winch out a lot of logs.

For the arch contact Future Forestry Products they're at futureforestry.com. The arch they make is a modern version of a centuries old concept. My experience has shown that with the arch the capacity of your winch is tripled. The arch lifts the front end of the log off of the ground putting the load on rubber tires and letting it move more freely. I have easily moved 28" diameter 40' oak logs. Also, by lifting the front end of the log you are reducing your impact on stream banks and hillsides thereby reducing potential erosion. I hope this helps. Good luck.

My dad bought one of those winches about 30 years ago. We used it to get fire wood. Its the next best thing since the wheel. we still use it to clear the woods and pull the neighbor's skid steer out of the mud. Realy a handy tool.

If you have a tractor with a loader you can chain a long pole to the bottom of the bucket it will act as a boom. Also works with a dump truck to lift a pole when you raise the box. Caution always..
