I just bought a 10x7 drill and want to paint it back to original colors. It looks to be mainly red, but the discs/openers are blue and the wheels look to have been creme or white colored. Could anyone help me with the colors on this old drill? Also if anyone has info on where to get the decals, that would be great. Thanks

Richard, I don't know how to post pics, but did post one over on the "implement photos" section. You have the colors correct except for the wheels. Ours was a cream color. Had to have it mixed.

I think you got it. Red mostly, the opener parts are blue and I think the wheels are white but I will go look for sure today. I have no idea where to get decals. bill

thanks, It appears to be very patriotic (Red, white and Blue) even though I think it was made in Canada! Let me know for sure.

I took a look this afternoon. The main frame and drill box is red. Wheels are the white color they used. The disk opener castings, braces going frome the openers to the front of the dril frame, down pressure spring and the rod that is inside the spring are blue. The seed tubes are black. I think that is everything. This drill was built in Hamilton like they said and the seed chart inside the box is dated 1950. bill

Bill --

McCormick-Deering used a standard color scheme on all of their implements. I don't have any specific info on their grain drill, but here is a picture of their mowing machine -- outside of wheels midnight blue, inside of wheels cream-colored, etc. There's a website somewhere in Wisconsin that has all of the old IHC corporate paperwork concerning color schemes for all the implements -- unfortunately, I can't find it right now but maybe somebody else out there has it at their fingertips.

Good luck with your project, and be sure to post a picture of it when you're done!

You have the colours right. Just like the Montreal Canadiens hockey team. These drills were made in Hamilton, Ontario in the late 40s to mid 50s. They were replaced by the model 10. On the farm there was a model M drill, 20x6. This was pulled by a Super C in a pinch, but was usually behind a Super W-4, and then pulled by a JD 420-W. The SW-4 would pull in 4th gear, but the 420 could only hold 3rd gear, and would get hot on some upward slopes. If it were not for a 3ph, and a better operators platform, the 420 was worse than the SW-4. Plus the d--n 420 required an overhaul at 8 years of age; something that the SW-4 did not receive until it was 17 years old..... QR..
