IM THINKING ABOUT PALANTING RYE FOR STRAW IN AN OLD FIELD "SOD".NEVER PLANTED IT. GOT ABOUT 25 ACRES TO TRY. I"M INTERESTED IN SEEDING RATES AND EXPECTED YIELD (BALES PER ACRE).ALSO SHOULD I SPRAY THIS FIELD FIRST OR JUST SPRING PLOW AND SUMMER FALLOW TILL FALL?

I have planted Rye right after sod and had great results, I was only planting for straw. You get probably 100 bales per acre, it really out grows wheat as far as yield goes.

I would do an internet search for your states agronomy guide. Mine (Pa) is available online. This will give you guidelines for your area. I've never grown rye for straw but some neighbors have and had trouble drying it. The method of choice is spray it with roundup, let it die down for 2 weeks and then mow it.
