what are your opinions of a NH 848 round baler? i've never used a chain baler before. do they work well on short hay as well as longer hay? how easy to start the bale? how big a diameter bale does it make? other comments? thanks.

I owned a NH 848 for several years and it did an excellent job. Because it uses air bags instead of springs for bale tension it would make very tight bales. I baled about 1500 bales of bermuda and fescue hay a year with it. It makes 4X5 bales and it is very easy to start a bale. In heavy, large windrows you have to slow down or it break shear pins in the pickup. I upgraded to a NH 658 because I wanted a larger baler with more capasity.

The 848 will make a 4-1/2' bale of just about anything. They're quite versatile, or seem to be in my limited experience with one. That said, I'll keep my experience limited. The Claas 44S I run will outbale an 848 by about 2:1, or close to that. Personally, I think they have a lot of moving parts and foolish mechanisms, but that's just my take on it. There's a lot of them out there, and they work. If you find one that's not worn out or overpriced, or both, then it's worth a look. Just don't expect to set the world on fire with productivity. For what it's worth...
