I'm trying to set up my 4x16 IH trailer plows to pull behind my Massey 1100. I used to pull them with my John Deere 830 and they worked fine, behind my old 4020 and they would pull crooked. I need to know how to figure the center of draft on these plows and if there is anything else I should know.

I couldn't tell you what model. My father in law bought them cheap years ago. Thought he could pull them behind his JD 730. That didn't work so he parked them in the weeds. I dug them out 6 years ago when I took over the farm.

The center line of draft of any plow is 1/4 bottom width to the left of center of the total cut of the plow. That gives you the lateral position of the hitch point. Vertical position is another thing, and I can't tell you what that is from memory, but it does factor in, to a lessor degree. When you determine hitch point, you need to set the tractor's rear wheels accordingly to make the plow pull correctly. Hitch at the centerline of the tractor, and move the right rear wheel so the inside of the tire just hugs the furrow wall.

barnrat: Most of the problem you've been having are due to wheel tread settings. A 4x16 plow will require roughly 72" wheel tread. That is center to center on rear tires. Width of tires do have some effect as the actual measurement your are looking for is inside of right tire to center line of tractor.

I used to have a chart which gave these measurements for all; numbers of bottoms and width of cut of each bottom figure given was inside if right rear tire to center line of tractor, however I've lost that over the years. Most ag engineering depts will have those figures. Center to center 72" will be close on 16.9x38 tires, I used that for years on the same model plow you have and 4x16 also. Pulled it with Farmall 560.
