I own an old farmhouse that came with a 15 H.P. electric 220/440v motor in a shed. I have absolutely no use for this beast. Is it worth anything to anyone? Does anyone have any recommendations on who to contact that may have a use for it? I doubt that it works as it's barely inside the loafing shed and has had sand blown in it, but most likely could be re-wound.

With the de-industrialization of the country, electric motors etc. and especially 3 phase ones even relatively new ones, are a dime a dozen at about any scrap yard. I bought a pallet of 4 motors 3 5 horse motors, and a 10 horse motor all 3 phase and the 3 5 horse motors were new still in shrink wrap at an auction 2 years ago for 47 bucks.
So your easiest option is to have the junkman tear up his back loading it.

Around here there are a lot of motors that size used to power irrigation pumps, so you might check with some pump installers, and they might take it on consignment or something. Biggest problems is I'm guessing its an older outfit, and the newer ones run more efficiently, meaning unless the price was very reasonable, not too many people are going to want to use it, especially if the reliability is questionable.

It"s likely the sand could be washed out with warm soapy water after disasembling the motor. Rinse and dry well them put it back together and megger it. About 2 meg would be minimum. New bearings would be a good idea if any doubt exists. As long as the winding insulation is good the exposure to water won"t hurt. I seen a 200HP open frame 600V AC sump pump motor still running when under water. The cable joints in the junction box had Raykem heat shrink boots that were water proof. Unless it"s an odd frame size it"s cheaper to toss a motor and purchase a new one rather then re-wind. I assume this motor is three phase?

Thank you, I"ll not worry too much about not doing something useful with it. When it starts being in the way, I"ll get rid of it. Yes, it"s a 3 phase. I"d give it away if someone wanted it, but it sounds like it"d be easier and obviously more reliable to just buy a new one.
