I have seen on some of the old plows that have a plate attached to the moldboard towards the back (it is like an extension). I assume that this helps cover trash. It is not in my parts book for the JD 44. What is this called and what is it for?

Thanks for the info BUDD

We have lots of rocks, so going fast enough to make the furrow lay down is a problem. I've found old knives off of a chopper work very well. They are already curved just about the right amount. Works good for us.

I wouldn"t use them in rocky fields. Got two plows with broken moldboards because of those.

If ya can not find what you are looken for i have made up extenshions a couple times before by using flat stock , now i do not remeber the excat name or # of the steel that i used but it was tougher the regular mild steel and was a bear to drill thru as ya had to use Tap Magic then we would heat it and make a slight twist and grind the corners for a littel radious they worked good enough for us.

Something like 425 wear plate mabey? I think they call it QT1000 plate now. It's just a quenched and tempered plate. Generally used for plow blades and such, and needs to be hot formed. It is just barely drillable. Much easier to pierce with the torch.

Budd, The moldboard extensions help roll the furrow a little farther like Hugh said. They are real helpfull with the newer JD bottoms. The extensions are not in the plow parts book and niether are any bottoms. Deere has two sepatate parts books for plow bottoms. One book has all the old syracuse and john deere bottoms in it and the other book includes the HS, NU, and metric bottoms. The only extension available is probably going to be the one for the HS and NU bottoms. That one will probable work on the older bottoms too.

Budd: That extension you often see was designed to give a bit better roll to old sod. Old sod can quite often be difficult to turn, often times furrows will stand on edge, yes even roll back as you move along the furrow. Very annoying if your the guy on the tractor seat. Those extensions simply lay it right down in place. There has been many a 4 letter word uttered from a tractor seat trying to plow old sod without those.

They probably do cover trash better as well, but that was not the original intent.
