I'm currently looking for a 2 row picker, 30 inch. I know nothing about them as I'm just getting started to do a little farming, more for hobby at this time. I'm growing for deer plots and Phesants. I would appreciate anything that you can tell me about corn pickers, what to look for, built by, model numbers? What NOT to buy. Thanks for anything you can pass on.

you will have a hard time finding a 2 row 30" picker as most are set for wide rows you would be better off finding a old 1 row .

Here"s one on ebay for about $200, tractor included. I figure it"s only for picking those really small ears of corn like you get at the salad bar in town.

If you are growing for "Deer Plots" and "Pheasants" why are you interested in a Corn Picker? Just a question so don't get all twisted.

I shell and store some of the corn to use in a battery operated feeder in other parts of the property. I also sell some to reap back the cost of seed.

I purchased a New Idea 324 picker last year. It was a 2 row wide (snapping rolls are set for 40" centers) with a 12 roll husker. Drove real slow and picked the food plots. Corn was planted in 30" rows. Left some in the field from shelling and just missing to pick it up. I picked in the Spring..deer and birds just left too much to disc under. Paid $275 in MN for the picker...never touched it. Turned with pipe wrench to test if free...hooked up pto and it worked great. Found a narrow NI 325 picker with sheller and grinder last Fall. That has 32" spacing on center rollers. The grinder was left on and sat outside for years. Sheller was kept inside...That turns free. The picker will need to have all the chains pulled and soaked in oil. It wants to turn a bit,,,Don't want to wreck it. Paid over $350 for that. Narrow row pickers are hard to find. I won't need to pick this year. Had about 60 deer eat up the corn. Now I need a 15' stalk cutter or shredder to chop the corn, forage and grain sorghum.

Why pick food plots? in reply to Vito V, 03-29-2006 15:16:39
Just curious. Isn't the grain normally left on the stalkl?

The most popular two row picker still in use here in PA is probably the new idea 325. They are good pickers, and bring a fair amount of money. ($1-3k) The most important thing to remember is shut it off when you get off the tractor. A lot of people lost hands and arms, and sometimes more to corn pickers.
