I've been looking for a small hammer mill to grind a little corn for some hogs it looks like there hard to find I have found one a Minneapolis Moline it seems to be in pretty good shape but it only has one screen with it and it is belt drive how could I drive this off the pto I think I could rig a shaft on but kinda worried it might not turn it fast enough but what about replacement hammers or extra screens I don't want a grinder mixer just something small Should I keep looking maybe for another brand because parts might be easier to find such as a JD etc. or are parts gonna be hard to find for all of these things (machine shop) Thanks Kip

I"ve seen them set up with an old tire and wheel mounted under the drive pulley. This setup had a PTO shaft attached to it allowing you to use the PTO to run the belt driven mill. Don"t know how well this worked as I have never seen one in use this way.

I can't tell you anything about the old MM hammermill. However, I do have a NH 355 grinder mixer. The drive relationship on those pulleys would be something like a 18" drive pulley and mabey a 6" driven on the mill. This is on a straight 540 PTO input. So the drive ratio is something like 3:1, with a mill speed of about 1600-1800 rpm. Mill speed wouldn't be too critical anyway. A bit slower will just do less work, faster will do more. Just don't go too slow, or the hammers don't have the centrifugal force to do their work. I don't think I'd want to see the mill speed fall under 1200 rpm.
I think a 1/4" screen is about right for corn. Mabey 5/16". Depends on how fine you want it. One other thought, if you're handy, is to take the mill off a junked grinder mixer like a Deere or NH, and just set it up as you like. That way you can probably be sure of getting parts easily if you're unsure of the MM. If you just cut the tank off a rusted out mixer, you would have it all set up without much work at all. HTH.

Hogs can grind their own corn.

The only Hammer mill I have had experience with is a John deere 10a, and the pulley on the mill is at least 1/2 the size of the tractor. You don't mention your tractor, but a JD B at 1275 rpm would turn the mill in excess of 2000 rpm. They made PTO adaptors but not to drive the mill at PTO speed i.e. 575 rpm. Your best bet is to get a belt 40 feet one way should do it. Russ
