Ford 101 Plow Questions

I just pulled the old 2 bottom Ford plow out of the fencerow down on the farm to use with my "new" Ford 850. It probably hasn't been used for a good 30-35 years. It's a model 10-163 14" trip bottom with a tail wheel, coulters, and an adjustment lever. Could some one explain to me just what the heck that width adjustment lever is good for? Yeah the plow twists when you move the lever, but why would you need it? I've plowed a lot of ground with our 8n and a Dearborne plow and never once thought to myself 'Gee, I wish I had a way to change how wide I'm plowing'. Maybe one of you more experienced plowmen could educate this youngster on the matter. Also, I was currious as to what the different model designations ment on the 101 plow. Like I said, mine's a 10-163, but I've noticed a few others mentioned in the forums. Anybody have a breakdown of what the model numbers mean?

That width adjustment lever is a life saver if you are plowing on a hillside. As you come down the hill and it levels out at the bottom the situation changes... I inconsistent ground the lever helps alot...

The lever's awfully handy if using on more than one tractor. Also negates the need to move wheels in or out between plowing & other work if you only have one tractor. She'll pull a lot (I mean a LOT) easier if she's set level both ways, pulling straight behind the tractor and cutting 14 on all bottoms! Great plow, pulls the best!
