Hi Everyone, I gotta question for you all - since I'd like to plant .5-1 acre of Sweet Corn this year, and I was going to get a row planter like JD 71 or a Sidewinder planter if I can figure out who made it and if I can get parts for it...

Should I end up getting a two row or 1 unit? I went to the Seed Dealer the other day and he told me that to plant 1/2-1 acre I'd need 5-10 pounds of seed and (I realize this sounds dumb) but would I need to double the quanitity that I purchase (5-10lbs per hopper) or would I spilt the amount between the two seed hoppers?

Also, if I disk the ground without plowing, can I do a conservation type set up? I want to get a plow, but its either I get a planter, or get a plow type deal for now until I find either or 'cheap'...

Thanks Christos

If you are planting in light soil (sandy loam etc) a disk is all you will need assuming that it has been broken recently. If it is too rough a bottom plow might be necessary. If you are in heavy soil you better plan on a bottom plow that you used last fall (you may be a little late) then you can use the disk to finish now.

I "Sleeved" my planter boxes with aluminum flashing with wood spacers out to inside of box to keep centered over plates. Drastically cut down on amount of $10/lb. sweet corn seed needed to reliably plant without brushing seed into mechanism while moving. Just a quick cheap thing that works for me!

Two row for sure, it will take half the time to plant and you will be able to cultivate.

A JD 71 planter would do a good job for you and you can still get parts for it, i would get a 2 row, 5-6 lbs will be plenty for an acre (less for 1/2 acre) and you would split that between the two hoppers
