I posted this on another forum and didn't get any responce, maybe no one is old enough to remember these hoes? I picked up an old rotary hoe at a sale a year or two ago, it has wheels on it that are adjustable, does anyone know anything about these old hoes, did they do a good job, were the wheels used for gauge wheels with slower older tractors, or perhaps horses? Any and all information would be greatly appreciated!

It would be the width for either 2 - 40" rows or 3 - 40" rows and yes it was made for horses walking at 2 1/2 MPH and those wheels were for carrying from field to field as if pulled on the ground thru grass in the lane it would completly wrap (Plug) up pulling the grass and wraping the wheels, later when they quit using the transport wheels a flat bed trailer was used for that transportation before the mounted hoe and yes the faster you go the better they will work but then those old cast wheels could not handle the stones without breaking at verry fast speeds

Used an antique drag rotary hoe alot and also have a new three point one. Both need alot of speed to work properly. They do a nice job of breaking crust and knocking out small weeds even when the plants are 2-3 inches high.

Hi Animal,

I 'member a lot of hoes, but none of 'em had gauge wheels. I've seen pictures of the things tho and never really understood why they had the wheels, other than maybe transport?

Fact is, I can remember adding weight to the old ones to make 'em cut on real hard rain packed fields.

Dunno,

Allan
