Post hole digger size

What do you guys recommend for fence and deck building for post hole digging? I have a Ford 960, so power should not be an issue.

I was leaning towards a 9 inch auger, but people are telling me that I need 12 inch. Do they drill straight? I'll mainly do pasture fence and 4x4's for deck building.

I have terrible clay, so maybe the extra width would help to fill the hole back in and allow tamping.

Any experience or thoughts on this?

I have a Befco 200 with 12 inch auger. Do not go any smaller than 12". When the post hole digger is on a 3 point hitch it is difficult to keep perfectly straight and the 12" gives you wiggle room and fudge space for a straight fence. However once you see how an auger runs on the front of a skid steered Bobcat, Gehl etc. you will rethink the entire idea of doing it with a farm tractor. This is one task that may be well worth the rental price vs. sanity.

I run a 14" and (occasionally) a 12" with my PHD on my 8N. Kind of a mix of dirt and clay here in SE Nebraska. 9" is good for chain-link fence.

I have both. When using 4x4 post, I use the 9" and does take as much concrete.

After last summer tryen to put hole in the ground with our 12 inch Danuser with brand new cutters and point and all it did mas make nice 12 inch circles in the dirt i barrowed a buddys Hdy auger that went on the skidsteer , now that is the way to put holes into the ground and whenit made contact with a rock that it could not munch up ya just put it in reverse and backed it out of the hole no more sheared Keys or broken gears or fighten the shaft off the PTO and getting the pipe wrench to back it up just put hole in the ground no matter how hard it is now all we have to do is find one that we can afford .

could not agree with you more, I can ever hardly get mine to dig but one month a year. Home Depot rents a self-propelled digger with reverse, down pressure, and augers that don't bend.

I've got a 12" auger and I would never go back to the 9". Never seemed to have enough "wiggle room" with the 9".

I have a 9" but wish I had a 12" Not enough room in a 9" hole to move a 6x6 pole around if the hole
isn't in exactly the right place.
