ID rotary cutter?

I don't have a pic but thought I'd describe a rotary cutter (brush hog) that is for sale locally.

It appears to be an older one. Very heavy steel used in construction. 5 feet wide with straight leading edge. No back wheel!. It has skid-type runners on each side. At the back the corners angle toward the back. The entire deck looks like a rectangle with the back corners cut off (to give you a visual).

It has a good sized gear box on it. It has a single blade shaft on the underside. The blade is a straight flat metal bar with "swinging" blades on each end.

There is a remnant of an old oval metal tag on the deck near the gear box. It isn't legible but appears to have a 5-6 letter name beginning with an "S" (I think).

I put a call in to the seller to get a price. I need a rotary cutter but have never bought one and can't afford new. Any advice on this item would be appreciated.

The interesting thing about this cutter is that it appears it never had a tail wheel. The sides have skids/runners...almost like snow sled. These look like they would keep the cutter blades at a uniform height off the ground.

I'll go back and take a closer look at the label. As for it being a 'Schultz' brand....the bits of the lettering remaining doesn't look like it would back this up.

Could the brand be "Schultz"? I have one, sounds like your description. I couldn't find blades for mine, so had a local blacksmith shop make up some for me. Mine has a rear wheel, and I would be hard put to run it without. Think maybe previous owner of yours may have removed wheel. Not good.

I agree, without the tailwheel, it"s gonna be tough keeping it at a consistant height. As for the brand, it sounds kinda lika a Woods brand.

I would not buy it without with the rear wheel assembly. They would have to be giving it away, then it would be worth the 150 bucks to have one put on it. Without that wheel you would be constantly fighting with the hydraulics to try and keep the thing even close to level.
