Been restoring an old JD running gear that was my Grandfathers. It had a wooden flare box on it at one time. Anyway, been looking for a wooden flare box and found one here in my home town. Finally got around to calling the guy and he said it was sold. Figures, just my luck. Got to talking with him and found out he sold it for $30 and the guy who bought it is going to tip it over and make a play house out of it for his kids. This box is in great shape. Just made me sick when he told me what they want to do with it. Told him I would have gladly gave him 3 times that and what I wanted to use it for. He said that he would rather see it restored and used for something like that than becoming a play house but he couldn"t back out of his word. Told him I didn"t want him to do that. He said he would tell the guy who bought it that I would give him double his money for it so maybe will get it after all. Thing is I have had my eye on that thing for about a month and he just sold it last week. Excuse me while I go bang my head on the wall to soften up some of my German procrastination and to shake the image of it being a play house.

Don't know where you are but in central Illinois wood flare boxes can be had for carrying them off.I have bought about 5 or 6 with gears in the last year for less than a $100.00,burnt the boxes
and built hay racks on the gears,Look around there is more out there .

Keith, you should be flogged:) LOL I am in northeast Iowa. You should have brought those over here, you probably could have made some money:) Just came home from looking at another one. Guy wants over 400 for it. It is in worse shape than the one that was around here. It comes with an endgate seeder and a home made running gear from an old car. Missed another one that was advertised in the Spokesman. Well just keep looking.

I had been tryin to talk this farmer I know, fairly well, out of some equipment for about a year now. Farmer hadn't used any of it in something like ten years. Various other had borrowed it over the years so I know it all worked. He just didn't use it any more. Disk, cultivator, sprayer, and a tedder. Bout $3000 worth. I see him every couple weeks or so, always ask him how he's doin, and if'n he was ready to part with them. He set the price several times but just wouldn't quite commit. Might need it someday. No pressure from me, just let me know. I went over that way to see another fella here last week and was told he was over at the farmers place. OK, so I go over there. I found the fella I was lookin for cuttin it all up. Said the farmer was need'n money, told him nobody wanted it and he'd split scrap price if he cut it up and take it in. ?? I just seen this fella two days earlier (shakin head in dis-belief) and he said he was thinkin bout it and the money could come in handy. P1ss'r part was this wasn't no paint, 50 year old, smaller equipment. A $1000 disk and $800 cultivator was done and loaded, $500 sprayer laid in pieces, $1000 Kuhn 4 basket tedder was (thankfully) untouched. He had no idea what it was worth and just about cried when I told him. He said he'd get the tedder loaded weighed and bring it, the tank, pump and markers to me. Scrap price just like the guy asked for. I offered more but he said no.

I had heard he had done this a few years back. Was offered like $5-600 for something, turned it down flat and gave it to a scrap dealer for 40 or 50 bucks bout month later. And no, I didn't believe it either, I do now.

But hey, it his to do with as he please's. Maybe he was out of beer money or off his meds, I don't know??

I do know the fella I went to see is freakin out this guy will sober up and sue him. As he went, started, and was done, the day he called. I thought I'd offer the farmer 5 grand for a package deal next time I see him just to see what he says. But I figure I let that sleeping dog lie. I sure don't what the farmer going after him for the difference and I just a soon he didn't know I had the tedder.

Good luck with it. Hopefully you'll offer the guy enough$$ he can go to a box store and buy some lumber and build a playhouse. Maybe offer to build a playhouse for him? Just kidding....sort of. Ben
