Can anyone give me the procedure for pulling the drive shaft and replacing the sprockets on a New Holland 848 round baler?

Simm,

They remind me of putting a heater core in a Ford Taurus. Since that shaft drives everything else on the baler, the whole darned outfit has to be gutted to get access to your repair.

Find the connector links on the apron chains, rotate 'em up front and lift the gate. Pull the shoes out and lock 'em outward with a pair of vice grips on each side.

Carefully let the gate back down and the chain will lie in the bottom of the chamber giving you slack. Use a come-along (or two) to handle the weight of the chain, unhook the links and roll the chain down, back and off that drive shaft.

Then, it is just a matter of stripping down that shaft from both ends so that you can remove it.

Be careful with that big chain. It is a heck of a lot heavier than you would think.

Also, I would mark the relationship between the sprockets, driveshaft and the chain because it certainly can go back in there and run "out of time" or (crooked) if you're not paying attention.

Thanks Allan. I have done all that already. Now I am stuck on one of the lock collars and I have to get the shaft to break free from the bearings since they have been on there for probably 15 years or so. Any suggestions

We just burn 'em off w/a torch and put new bearings on if we can't get them off in a few minutes. Ain't worth trying to save something rusted on that bad.

Simm,

I don't mess with 'em. I use a power chisel with a big punch bit and chisel bit both.

They'll come; just a matter of time.
