How big of a chisel plow will a MF 90 handle??

Hello I just purchased a Massey-Ferguson 90 Diesel. It has a little over 50hp. How big of a chisel plow will this thing handle?? Thanks

The MF 90 is verry simular to a Ford 5000 and should have about 65PTO HP, both fall in same size and style class. Now here in northwest central Ohio when I had my Ford 5000 I had a Ford 2 bar 7 shank 3 point hitch chisel set on 12" spacing and with the twisted shovels pulled it anyplace I needed to but I only used it in bean stubble, used a moldboard in sod or cornstalks as I hated the job done with the chisel under those conditions, I also never ran deeper than 8" and it did what I needed none. I also had a Ford 4000 that compairs direct to the MF 65 and on that I would reduce the chisel by 1 shank on each side, I should have had gauage wheels on chisel that I did not have as the hydrolic did not seem to be working as should all the time.

I needed to add that for 50 HP you must be using drawbar rated rather than PTO max as dealer did when selling that tractor as the smaller MF 65 is related in size direct to the Ford 4000 at 52 Max PTO HP

Better tell us what you mean by a chisel plow. If a chisel cultivator for summer fallow work- about 12 to 18 foot. If a ripper, then about three shanks, and that would be too much.

We always figured 15 HP per shank, so I'd guess 4 would be absolute max but the smallest I ever saw in our area was a 5 shank unit. We pull 7 w/ our 105 HP 1855.

Depends on soil condations buddy of mine pulls a 10 or 12 footer with his super 90.

Are we talking a cultivator or a breaking plow? At 10 hp a foot, you would need a 190 HP tractor to pull a tiny 18 foot cultivator.

It appears some people are confusing a chisel plow with a field cultivator. Two distinct machines. A chisel plow, at least as I know it, has heavy shanks with high ground clearance spaced every foot. Typically we run 8 to 10 inches deep. Straight shovels will get you less shattering, but can get you by with 10 HP per foot. Twisted shovels will really break the clay, but need 15 HP per foot. A field cultivator has shanks every 7 or 9 inches, lower clearance, intended to work to a depth up to 6 inches, but usually shallower.

It depends on where you live and your definition of chisel plow. Here in Sask. a chisel plow, or field cult., are very similar. Chisel plow is heavier all around, 12 inch spacing of shanks and we usually use them for heavy tillage, summerfallow with 16 inch sweeps. Two to three inches is plenty deep for killing weeds. Personally I wouldn't try pulling more than 14 feet with the Super 90 I have. Maybe under ideal conditions it would pull 16 but traction will be the limiting factor with those 18.4x30 tires.

We had a MF super 90 diesel and we also had a 8ft chisel plow. If you have a heavy duty chisel plow and are breaking over stubble in the fall it pulls pretty hard. Add in different types of soil and you will get all kinds of results on width v.s hp.
