HP to run JD 24T baler

Just wondering how much horse power it takes to run a John Deere 24T Baler and pull a hay rack on flat ground. Would a Oliver 88 or a John Deere A be heavy enough and have enough horse power?

I used my farmall H to run my 24t and pull a wagon,,now I use my H to run a NH an pull the wagon,,also the haybine and the rake too,,Jim

We use a Farmall 200 or a JD B to run a NH 268 or an Oliver T60, with wagon behind. Your tractors ought to do fine.

We use a Farmall SMTA. Horsepower is more than adequate. I am thinking an H would be suitable also. Thing with these balers is that there is a lot of push from the plunger as it goes back and forth. Once you have the HP sorted out look for the heavier tractor to help counteract the rocking otherwise you may feel a little sea sick after a while. Second issue to consider is independant PTO. Very important as these are lower volume machines and will choke in heavy windrows. Cleaning them out is NOT fun and is time consuming and frustrating. With independant PTO you can stop the tractor and let it clear itself before it gets too bad. Good balers when matched with the right tractor. HTH

On level 20 HP, I would say a Farmall C or an Allis B . To bale on to a wagon no kicker , the Wd's handles it ok (35 HP ) (bigger would be better) .

I would say the 88 is going to just go right a long like it is out for a ride and is just pulling a three bottom plow.

An Oliver 88 will just play with that baler. I use an Oliver S88 to pull a big round baler and it plays with it.

when I working by myself that's how I do it. The wife has done this before when she is in the mood
to help. It was just so hard not to laugh, she just mainly hurt her pride. when the boy were still at home I would rather have her run the rake than my boys, she alway made great wind rows. I think the boys wanted to be doing other things and not thinking about what they were doing. But now their gone I sure do miss them.

We pull our 24WS with a 630 and it pulls easily. Biggest problem is being able to go slow enough in heavy hay. If you go too fast the baler spills hay over the sides of the windrow pickup.
