gang mower vrs. rotary ???

I"m intriqued by the potential effeciency of using one of those 10" gang mowers, as opposed to the rotary style, to do my 4 acres of mowing.The first page of this web site seems to imply that unless you have really smooth ground, they may not work too well. Anyone have any experience with these? My ground is pretty uneven. Thanks,

Two things the gang mower I had didn't like: 1) sticks, they jam the reels and 2) long grass, over about six inches the cutter either clogs or can't pick it up.

But if most of the ground you are mowing is open and fairly smooth (no ruts) they do cut a lot of area in a hurry without needing near as much horsepower as a rotary mower. You can always clean up around the edges with the rotary.

Debri and dirt mounds really play havoc on gang mowers. Think 'golf course' when you think gang mowers.

What size tractor ya got?

don"t have any of the toys yet.Just trying to figure out how to get the most bang for the buck. I want a tractor, a zero turn mower, a garden tractor and a 4-wheeler..unfortunately, can"t afford them all!!

IMHO.. if you have a ZTR.. the 'garden' tractor is about useless.. both are pretty much dedicated mowing machines.. with the exception that the GT could pull a cart and do some other chores.. however.. a SCUT tractor could do those chores.

If it were me.. I'd save money and not get the ztr.. but rather get an inexpensive rider mower like a 800$ murray, and just use it to mow around my house.. and 'tractor' everything else. If you want an atz.. consider one of the newer CUV's. i picked up a yerf dog.. that's an economy model.. but serves me well.. has a dumpable bed.. seats 2.. roll bars.. seatbelts.. good payload area.. a economy lawnmower and it together are still cheaper than a decent ztr..
