Bush Hog

Hey,
For the past 6 years I have been mowing about 3 acres or so with a 30hp compact tractor and a 5' bush hog. It's fine on the wide open portion, but once it comes to the areas that requiring maneuvering because of trees, etc, it becomes time consuming. We generally mow the field and surrounding areas several times a year. The bush hog is only really necessary if I let the grass get too high between mowings.
Recently, a hired hand brought a 25hp, 60" Zero turn mower to help mow. The grass was over 2' tall, and even though he had to go over it twice, it went as quick as going over it once with the bush hog. Now I'm thinking I might be better off with a powerful, more maneuverable, wide cut mower. Of course we'd keep the tractor for other work, but it is worth to me to make the investment to cut down on my mowing time.
Anybody have any experience or words of wisdom? It's not as expensive as another tractor, but it ain't cheap either.
Thanks!

So.... how much time are you taking to mow 3ac with a 5' mower. Used to take me 5-6 hrs to load and unload a 30ish hp machine with 5' mower.. haul it 4 miles down to my 10ac pasture... cut, and haul home... so figure 20 minutes each way was hauling/loading.. leaving 4-5 hrs mow time.. that's 2ac per hour or better...

If you are making considerably less than this.. ya might be goin at it slow.. ;-)

( I also got tired of that 5-6 hour ordeal and traded my 30ish hp machine for a 90ish hp machine and a 10' mower... Now I just road the tractor to and fro, and mow, and do it in about 2hrs 45 mins to 3hrs.. from pulling out of the barn to parking..

I wouldn't own a ztr unless I won it or it was a gift... they can't do much more than mow... kinda hard ( for me ) to justify a machine that is as expensive as a scut/cut that can only mow....

The open portion, which I"m guessing is about 2 acres, takes about an hour and a half. The remainder, which has trees, rocks, a pond and a stream w/ a dam, and steep hillsides, takes about 4 hours. The whole plot is on a south facing mountain side in NC. I generally mow in 2nd gear high, with the RPMs set on the tick mark for the PTO (forget what the number is). That"s about as fast as is practical. Bigger equipment would just be more difficult to maneuver in the tight spaces.

See posts on Tractor Talk forum on Zero Turn Mowers. I have a ZTR and like it.
