Our cousin has one that we borrow every now and then. It's a New Idea w/ one steel and one rubber roll, its a really nice unit, and very quiet. With 2 steel rolls, it can get real loud real quick.

I live in s.e. PA and the amish still use crimpers. You can get a lot of crimpers for $100 or less, but a New Holland 402 will bring $1000. It has steel intermeshing rolls (Cunningham rolls I think) and does a good job without plugging up.

I have to dissagree with that the JD 22 was a good crimper, we had one at same time as an AC machine with 2 rubber rolls and the hay dried 1 day faster with the AC than the JD as the wide spacing on the JD just would not break enough of the stalk, now the JD no. 1 was a very good machine but was only driven on one roll and was verry noisy and liked to break the rods that held the roll together, then the JD 21 was the best of the lot as it kept the same style rolls as the earlier one but had chain drive to both rolls and so was quieter and smother running and stamdard size whels instead of the 12" on the earlier one. When we han both the JD 22 & AC we had the AC first and bought the 22 thinking it would do the same job as the No. 1 and was going to get rid of the AC, turned out the 22 done such a bad job it was the one that went, later went to Case 555 Mower-conditioner with 2 rubber rolls and sold the AC, then stoped making hay and sold the haybine 25 year ago, would like to find a good JD 21 now to make about 9 acres of hay with. The McCormic with 2 rubber rolls also worked good as we used my Uncles for a couple of years before we bought our first JD No. 1 crimper but that No. 1 cut an aditional day off drying time of the 2 rubber roll machines and the 22 added anouther day to the drying time over the 2 rubber roll machines
