Just wondering if anyone has had experience with producting "long stemmed", bleached white rye straw, (premium straw for the high end horse market)? This is our third year of growing without too many problems, but since it needs to be tedded daily prior to baling we have been experiencing problems with the rye wrapping around the rotors causing all kinds of unplanned delays and issues. We have tried several home made guards, deflectors, and the like, with marginal success at best. A possible solution based on our experience would be a high clearance hay tedder, anything like that in existance, or any other ideas I should look into?
Thanks all...

I do rye straw here in the north east. Here's how I do it.I mow it with an old 990 IH haybine.Make tall narrow windrows. When it's 50% curred we go over it with a bush hog type mower to chop it up.We find it sells much better chopped then long stemed. After chopping, teding and raking is much easier. It also dries faster after it's bleached out.We get 4.50 per bale this way.

What are you mowing it with? It makes a difference if it has been through a conditioner or not. If I mow rye with the JD 1209, it won"t wrap up as bad as rye that was mowed with the MF sicklebar. Now if I mow with the M-C Rotary Scythe, it doesn"t wrap the tedder at all, but after that machine goes through, it really isn"t long straw anymore . . . . but it"s still worth some $$$ here.

I havent done rye straw for straw so take this for what its worth. I adjust ground speed for crop lenght. In timothy (4-5') I go 50% as fast as in orchard grass. Last year, in some rank pearl millet (over 6') I tedded slower than I ran the baler to keep it from wrapping. Normally my tedding speed is 50% of my mower speed. Rarely had a problem since I slowed down and tedding quality is better.

When do you cut rye, just before it heads out? What is rye straw worth a bale?

Could you change the angle of your tedder so it the front end is down more? Here the straw migh have less contact with the tedder and it would be thrown harder and might not wrap as much.(Disclaimer...This was just a wild a** guess on how to solve your problem. I have a tedder but never experienced the problem you are having).

John - The rye is grown for straw only, no grain is harvested, so it is cut after headding out but prior to setting seed. Our rye is around 6' tall when cut, thus is what causes the wrapping issues with the hay tedder. Yes we have done the tilting, etc., not much success however. Price wise, it is usually double the price for wheat, oat or other straws. This would be due to rye straw unique properties of being very clean, soft and long stemmed, all which makes it excellent stall bedding for the high end horses. Most first time producers do not make it past 5 years, we are 3 years in with the goal of making it a permanent part of our hay and staw business. Maybe I need someone to build us a custom rye staw tedder????!!!!!

Six feet? We thought we did good last year w/ about 4 feet when we put it in the silo!!

This was the shorter end of the feild, no fertilizer was put down with it or after the fact, this was just an old cow pasture for a few years.
