Can anyone tell me what heads (corn or hay) will fit on a John Deere 38 forage harvester? And where can you get them? Also, what years was the 38 manufactured? Thanks

Don't claim to be all knowledgeable but will relate my experience with the model 38. Bought one new in 1969. Had sorghum in 40" rows up to 16' tall. Tried to chop it with the old Gehl two row we had been using for several years. Wouldn't handle it. JD dealer said the new 38 was the cat's meow. We bought one, hooked it to a JD 5010 and it cut like a dream. It was also very good in down tangled feed. Never used anything on it but the 2 row head and a 5' pickup head. I think the row, pickup and direct cut heads were interchangeable with the model 34, 35, 38, 3800 and maybe even later models. There are still quite a few of them still around here, but most are getting pretty well used up. Saw one sell (model 35 with 2 row, pickup and direct cut head) sell just last Saturday. One weak point on them was the sickle setup on the row head. The pivot bearings were prone to getting dirt in them and then the bearings would wear out. Were a bit on the ornery side to replace. We still have the 38 and used it every year until last year. Good machine.
