I am designing a trailer for my skid loader so I don't have to haul that tiny thing on the 30' goosneck all the time and am wondering if anyone has an on-line source of steel prices. Just kind of curious how much the angle and channel iron will run me before I get too far into the design process. I hate calling the local shop and bugging them if I can find out online, even a ball-park figure.

I dont know the price of steel but I do know that if you build your own it will probably be heavier and stronger, but when you resell it, it will be discounted because it was homemade. The general public likes the factory made because they think it is made to specs or something. If you have some steel and need some additional steel, build it. You will have the experience and have some fun doing, and you can build it to your specs. I would not be afraid of purchasing a homemade trailer.

I don't know where you are located in Iowa but this trailer on ebay wouldn't be too far into Wisconsin. You would have to build a deck over the frame to put the floor on but I bet you could buy this new trailer cheaper than you could buy the axles and tires under it.

Price here, KY, commercial account, Monday $.85 a pound for plate and tubing, $.80 a pound for channel and angle. No way I have ever been able to build one for what I can buy it.

If your buying new steel and then also figure your time at say $5 per hour your better off buying a prebuilt trailor. Cost to build one will be about half again more then buying one that is built by a company unless you figure your time isn,t worth any thing

I think you will find that you can buy one new for the same dollars as you can build it.....

Is that for new steel? The last plate I bought was about 77 cents. That is Canadian funds, but the exchange is not that far apart right now. Channels and angles are about the same. I think the last HSS I priced last spring was mid to high eighties a pound. We often pay 20-30 cents for usable scrap steel up here.
I know Russell Metals has the monopoly in my area, but man, that is a huge difference!

What about prices for flat stock and square tube.
I need some some 3/8 x 3 and 3/8 x 2 flat
and some 4x4x60 square tube and 2x2x24 square tube.

Thanks.
