Lets say it is 1959 and you buy a new 720 or 730 wide front. What model plow, disk, drill and mower would the JD salesman have recommended at time of purchase? Also, which plows performed best, semi- mount or the towed?

I would think maybe a 666 plow, RW disk, cca cultivator, 8W sickle mower, 14t baler, 495 planter, 227 picker, 30 combine, 45 loader. There are a few other things that would fall in that time frame but these were pretty popular. bill

billonthefarm, I don't know if you received my thanks and reply earlier. If you don't mind, I have a couple of other questions. I can't find any pictures of a 666 plow. Was it a tow model or what? How many bottoms and were the bottome 14 or 16 or what? Also, can the 495 planter be used for planting the grass type seeds i.e. timothy or alfalfa? If not, what type would have been used with the 720 or 730? Sorry for the long string of questions. B. Abseck

John deere had a piece of literature that was a catalog of implements that were suggested to use behind the tractor. Remember one plow thing. The Semi-mounted plow as we know them were not introduced untill late fall of 1960 by Oliver and probably a year and half later by John Deere. Around most were sold without a 3 point so they would have all been pull type implements.
