Ok I need some HELP. I just got my new (to me) plow home. This is what I know. It is a 44 trip with rubber tires (well no tires at the moment just rims). I think it is the big frame that can be adjusted from 14" to 16". How do I measure what it is now? I know you measure the beams, but is it the outside of the beams or the inside or the centers? If I measure from rear (bottom) shear tip to front outside shear it measure about 30"+, so I would guess it is a 16". There is a number WOP 316 on one moldboard. The shears have a tongue (for lack of a better word) on them for the point. I assume these are not the ones that came on this plow. How do I figure out what shear"s I need? I am not wanting to bring this plow back to new, I just want it to plow good for plow day.

You can also check out Balster's Implement in Scotch Grove, Iowa. They've been in business for over a 100 years and still carry a lot of the older plow shares, blade shares, moldboards, etc. You can reach them at (800) 621-3838 or at www.balsters.net

That is one model that you can't measure from the beams, the smallest frame for 10" or 12" bottoms will measure 11" from the same side of one beam to the same side of the other, the medium frame is for 12" or 14" bottoms and will measure 13" on the beams, the large frame is for 14" or 16" bottoms and will measure 15". take the frame measurements and then look at the vertical part of the beam that the bottom is fastened too, if the bottoms of those pieces are tutned in then it is the small size for that frame, if flaired out it is the large size on that frame. But then the same mouldboard is used for all 10", 12' 14" bottoms just with a longer share for each size. Also if adjusted for the small bottom the furrow will be turned with the offset to the inside, large bottom wheel turned to outside.

The frog is what all the bottom parts fasten to and fastens to the beam, the shin is IF there is a 2 piece boldboard and it is the small front piece but I have never heard of a bottom with the blacksmith shares that had it and acording you do have the blacksmith sharpen shares and some are avaible and some are not. Do you realize that you could buy from parts yards complete blade (Throwaway type shares) bottoms for less than it would cost for a blacksmith type sharpen share from Deere. Any bottoms from the early type 4-5-6 bottom semi mount plows will fit and they will work as good. The later version was 444 and had those blade shares and the shins.

Throwaway cannot be made to work instead of the blacksmith share but I have rebuilt a blacksmith share using a throwaway share cut for parts to rebuild the blacksmith share and I am sure that your shares will at least need sharpening using a forge and hammer with anvil, DO NOT gring to sharpen them

Leroy Thank you, now I understand and know what I have as far as sixe. It is the large frame set for 16". From what I have been reading I think I have the right shears on it from factory. There is two bolts that hold them on with one of the bolts being hooked on the back side by an "I" bolt type rod that can be adjusted. Just that sould right? I take that these are the ones that are no longer available from mother Deere? Do you have any more info that might help me?

Thanks again BUDD

There is a share available from Deere for that plow. I bought two last year. Part number BCA218A.

There was a response here on YT last fall from an Earl Seamands of Mahomet, Illinois that listed a company that still makes these plow parts (shares, landsides and moldboards) at their foundry in Havana, IL. Office phone (in Canton, IL) is 309-543-3348. Company name is Crescent Forge and Shovel.

Does not matter where, as long as it's the same on each bottom- left side of one frame to left side of the next frame, etc. Length of plowshare is not a good indication- measure the frame of the plow.
