Shear pin or slip clutch, solid or laminated tail

I'm looking to buy a new bush hog, and would like your opinion about a couple of options.

First, should I get a shear pin or a slip clutch? Is it worth the additional expense to get a slip clutch? The area where I will be bush hogging is near a creek, and although I am trying to clear the rocks, they are the most likely thing I would hit.

Second, should I get a laminated tail wheel or a solid tail wheel? The cost difference is not significant, so it is a matter of what I prefer. What is the advantage of one type of tail wheel over the other.

Your help is appreciated.

I would go with the slip clutch. There is a little more work to having them. You need to protect the slip clutch from the elements when the unit is not being used or the clutch will stick and not do what you want it to when you need it. I take my driveline off when the cutter is not in use and store it under cover. I loosen the adjusting bolts when in storage and retighten them to the original sping length when I put it back in service. I like the laminated tail wheels because I have always used them and had no problem with them. They're rugged.

I have heard the term "stump jumper", but I don't know what exactly it is. Is it part of the frame, deck, or blade assembly. The one I am looking at is a Bush Hog SQ720, but I cannot tell from the bush hog web site it that has a stump jumper or if I would have to go to the heavier duty 286.

Go with the 286 it is a heavier duty mower.I started with a sq720 and was unhappy with the way it performed.I haven't had any problems with the 286.Be sure to check the slip clutch like the manual says.

Clutch---it can be set for the conditions as they sometimes change and no bolts to mess with.
Laminated wheel.It will have a bit of cushion the solid wheel won't have.
